Navigating The Route
This is a circular Treasure Hunt through Winchester’s city centre, riverside paths, parks and cathedral grounds, with explorers following pavements, footpaths and historic streets as they track down Cat Berglagh’s hidden relic.
The route follows mostly good paths and pavements throughout, but includes cobbled sections and busy city areas, so care is needed, especially underfoot. It is generally suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs, though some surfaces may be uneven.
Important: You will be travelling through busy streets, crossing roads and exploring near riverside paths, so explorers should stay alert at all times, use crossings where available and keep younger adventurers under close supervision.
Take extra care in busier areas and around blind corners, where traffic can appear unexpectedly.
There are some fantastic events in Winchester's calendar, including amazing Christmas Markets and several festivals. During these events, some of the clues may become obstructed or difficult to access, in particular Clues 14 and 15, which cannot be accessed during the Christmas Markets.
Getting There
By car: Pay & display parking is available at Colebrook Street (SO23 3SD) or Chesil Street (SO23 0HU), both within easy reach of the start point.
By public transport: Winchester is well served by bus and rail links, with the bus station located right by the start point and the train station a short walk away.
Your adventure begins at the Guildhall on The Broadway (SO23 9GH) - so step into position and start scanning for your first clue straight away.
Need the Loo?
Even the most intrepid explorers need a quick pit stop!
Toilets can be found in Abbey Gardens near Clues 02 and 20, making this a handy location to plan a break during both the early and final stages of your quest.
Bring Your Furry Sidekicks
Four-legged explorers are welcome on the quest!
With a mix of city streets, parkland and riverside paths, it’s a great outing for dogs - just keep leads handy near roads, wildlife and busier pedestrian areas.
Food & Drink Stops
It’s a good idea to grab supplies near the start or along the route, with plenty of cafés, pubs and eateries throughout the city.
You’ll also find refreshments in The Refectory within the cathedral grounds near Clue 15, perfect for a well-timed mid-quest pause.
