Helpfully Hunt Heave-Ho's Hidden Hoard!

Ahoy, me hearties! This self-guided scavenger hunt Trail will have you scouring Scarborough's spectacular South Cliff area! You'll search high and low through beautiful formal gardens and will weave along the water's edge to uncover hidden gems and reveal fascinating stories about this seaside retreat!

Treasure Hunt Through Scarborough's South Cliff & Gardens

Once upon a time… On a foggy morning in 1683, a mysterious island map was found pinned to the wheel of an abandoned pirate ship floating into Scarborough. A scrawled note announced that the map would lead to the long-lost treasure of Captain Heave-Ho! Centuries later, local explorer Buck O'Nere finally located the mystery island. Can you solve the sneaky clues to help him uncover the buried loot?

Prepare for an exciting self-guided Treasure Hunt that will take you deep into the historic and scenic towns of Scarborough's South Cliff & Gardens. As you journey through Scarborough, you'll uncover sneaky clues hidden in historic buildings, permanent features, and intriguing monuments.

Your adventure begins in Scarborough Harbour, where the abandoned pirate ship was discovered centuries ago. But be warned-this Trail won't be easy. Captain Heave-Ho has always been one step ahead, and only the sharpest minds will be able to piece together the clues left behind.

The South Cliff & Gardens are calling… Are YOU ready to help Buck O'Nere find the hidden hoard?

What is a Treasure Trail?

Before You Set Off

Before you set off on your awesome adventure, there are a few things you need to know...

PLEASE NOTE: We strongly recommend checking the times of high tide here before setting off on your adventure, as part of the route crosses a beach that can be affected, particularly if the weather is stormy. Click here to see the tide times for Scarborough.

The Trail is not marked as friendly for wheelchairs or pushchairs due to uneven ground, steep gravel paths and some steps. All-terrain buggies may cope but would not be recommended.

Bring your four-legged friends along! Please note that there are two clues that are in an area where dogs are not permitted, so we would not advise bringing along your pup if you are doing the Trail alone.

There are a lot of car parks in Scarborough within easy walking distance from the start. However, during the summer and peak holiday periods, parking spaces can be hard to find, so the Park and Ride is often a better option to save driving around searching for an empty spot.

The Trail finishes at the seafront - to get back up to the start point, you will need to walk uphill or take a stepped path, or use the cliff lift if it is running.

There are some fantastic events in Scarborough's calendar, all of which are great times to visit this beautiful town. However, you may find that some of the clues on this Trail may become obstructed or difficult to access on these occasions. If you would like further information about event dates, please contact Scarborough Visitor Information.

There are toilets available in town before the start of the Trail, and there is a myriad of cafes, restaurants, pubs and other eating establishments at the beginning and end of the Trail. The gardens along the route make fantastic picnic spots if the weather is nice!

Why not make a day of it by visiting the Rotunda Museum along the way or head into Scarborough town to visit the castle? You could even challenge yourself to another Trail adventure to uncover more twisting tales about this amazing town!
