The Treasure of Maidstone - Can You Dig Deep To Unearth The Sweetest Spot?

Would you believe it? Local pranksters have only gone and told goofy treasure-seeker, Walter Nidget, that Maidstone's historic 'treacle mines' actually harbour hidden gems created from solidified amber-like treacle! They must have thought it was like taking candy from a baby… However, whilst exploring near the river, Walter chanced upon a small casket. Upon opening it, he felt like a child in a sweet shop as it excitingly contained a tattered old map with a series of clues to a buried treasure. So were these pranksters onto something? Is the treasure real? Where could it be hidden? And will Walter meet a sticky end or experience the sweet smell of success? Only YOU, as top explorers can help answer these questions and hopefully keep Walter sweet!

What is a Treasure Trail?

Before You Set Off

Navigating The Route

This is a circular treasure quest through Maidstone’s town centre, riverside paths and green spaces, with explorers following pavements, paths and pedestrian areas throughout. There are a few hills along the way - especially early on - and some sections near the River Medway, so take care underfoot and keep a close eye on your team near the water’s edge.

Parts of the route can occasionally flood, but don’t worry - alternative paths are available without missing any clues, so your expedition can continue smoothly.

Getting There

Time to gather your expedition team and set off in search of that sticky stash:

Palace Avenue outside the Magistrates Court (ME15 6NF) - The official starting point for your treasure hunt. The Mall Maidstone Car Park (ME15 6AT) - A large and convenient nearby parking option, with other pay and display car parks also available around the town centre.

Need the Loo?

Even top explorers need to plan their pit stops!

Toilets can be found at Maidstone Museum (around Clue 12) and in Fremlin Walk (after Clue 13). There are also plenty of cafés and shops in the first half of the Trail if you need to refuel - though options become a little more limited later on, so it’s worth planning ahead.

Bring Your Furry Sidekicks

Four-legged explorers are welcome to join the adventure. There are lots of paths and open areas to enjoy, but keep leads handy near roads and especially along the riverside sections.

Supplies & Sweet Strategy

The first half of your quest winds through Maidstone’s bustling centre, with plenty of chances to grab snacks, drinks or even a full picnic. After Clue 14, though, options become more limited - so make sure you’re well stocked before heading deeper into your search.
