Nessie-Bo's Notebook and the Ghost Portal

Intrepid explorer Vanessa Beaumont, also known as Nessie-Bo, has made many incredible discoveries in her lifetime. But her most extraordinary find, the Mystical Gemstone of Bownessia, came with a curse. When Nessie-Bo re-buried the gem in Bowness-on-Windermere, it opened a portal to a ghostly realm, unleashing curious spectres into the town. These nosy spirits have been causing chaos, constantly wanting to know everything that's going on. Fortunately, we have found Nessie-Bo's old notebook filled with her notes and scribbles, leading the way to the cursed gem. Now, we need YOUR help to solve the clues and find the gem's final resting place so we can dig it up and close the portal.

What is a Treasure Trail?

Before You Set Off

Before you set off on your awesome adventure, there are a few things you need to know...

This Trail is not marked as wheelchair or pushchair friendly as the route has sections with no pavement, passes through woodlands that can be quite muddy, and follows a country path that can be uneven in parts.

Bring your four-legged friends along, but please note that they will need to be kept on a lead in St Martin's Church grounds.

The largest pay and display car park nearby is at Braithwaite Fold (LA23 3HB), approximately a 10-minute walk from the start of the Trail. There is a smaller car park closer to the start point at Glebe Road, but this can get very busy, especially in the summer months.

There are several great events in Bowness on Windermere's calendar, with the Windermere Boat Show one of the most popular! Although these are unmissable times to visit, you may find that some of the clues are obscured or difficult to access during this time. If you would like further information about event dates, please contact the Bowness Information Centre.

Public toilets are available at the start and finish of the Trail. Pubs, cafes and other refreshment options are plentiful towards the beginning and end of the trail route.

Why not make a day of it and visit The World of Beatrix Potter or take in the beauty of Lake Windemere with a boat trip! You could even challenge yourself to our Bowness - Down by the Lake Trail and let out your inner slippery spy!
