The Great Bath Plug Mystery - Can YOU Save Windermere Lake?

Uh-oh… Windermere is in desperate danger! Very few people know this, but there's a giant bath plug at the bottom of the lake which is now under threat. The local ducks had this plug installed many years ago to turn this area into one massive bathtub for them to mess around in and do ducky things. However, the dastardly sheep, always greedy for more grazing land, plan to ruin the ducks' fun. They've set off a secret device that is primed to track down and dissolve this plug and thus, completely drain the lake! In desperation, the ducks have sought the assistance of our undercover spy agency to help them infiltrate the sheep spy ring and stop their evil plot. We need YOU, our best SUPER SPIES, to crack the code, deactivate the dissolver and save the bathtub… errr… lake from leaking!

What is a Treasure Trail?

Before You Set Off

Before you set off on your awesome adventure, there are a few things you need to know...

The route follows footpaths throughout with obvious step-free alternatives to any steps involved. There are two clues which require leaving the path to explore flat grassy areas.

Bring your four-legged friends along to stretch their legs too! The first section is great for stretching the legs, the last section will require a shorter lead as you explore the busier lakeside stretch.

For parking, there are a number of free parking spaces all along Glebe Road, where the Pay and Display car parks are located. The free spaces fill up early and are limited to two hours between Easter and October.

There are several great events in Bowness on Windermere's calendar, with the Windermere Boat Show one of the most popular! Although these are unmissable times to visit, you may find that some of the clues are obscured or difficult to access during this time. If you would like further information about event dates, please contact the Bowness Information Centre.

Toilets can be found at the start/finish point and in the car park near Clue 06. Our top lakeside picnic spot is around Clue 10, with several benches with great views along the path just before too. The route passes several snack and refreshment opportunities, mostly between Clue 12 and the end of the Trail, so stock up on snacks and supplies before you start if you're planning a picnic, or head into Bowness town for more pub and cafe options at the end of the Trail.

Why not make a day of it - Windermere is a magnificent lake so allow extra time to take a boat trip or just enjoy the lakeside views and have a paddle! Or head into Bowness itself - explore on your own or embark on a treasure hunt around the town on the Bowness on Windermere Treasure Trail!
