Before you embark on your intriguing investigation around Bellingham, here are a few handy tips...
Mixed Terrain - The route around this village-like town includes some steps, gravel paths, grassy paths, narrow pavements and a section of riverside path, and is therefore not suitable for wheelchair or pushchair users. Just a heads-up - the riverside path may be muddy after rainfall - we've included a detour if you wish to avoid the mud, but we recommend suitable footwear.
Bring Your Furry Sidekicks - While much of the Trail winds through the town, there is a green open space (Jubilee Field) where your canine companions might get the chance for a run. Just check any local bylaws before you let them loose.
Parking Sorted! - You’ve got three options close to the start point, all detailed within the Trail booklet: Hareshaw Linn Walk car park (NE48 2BZ), Jubilee Field (NE48 2JT), or Fairstead (NE48 2DS), all a few minutes' walk away. On street parking nearer the start may also be available.
Need the Loo? – Public toilets are available on the main street near Fountain Cottage Café and B&B, not far from the start of the Trail. Local pubs and cafés also have facilities for customers.
Want to Make a Day of It?
History Fix – if open, the Heritage Centre which you'll see towards the end of the Trail allows you to "see, hear and absorb the fascinating history of this special part of Northumberland."
Geography Fix - the Hareshaw Linn Walk is a fantastic detour which leads you through this 'Site of Special Scientific Interest' and across six bridges to reach a spectacular 30ft waterfall. Allow an extra 2 hours to follow the well-signed path there and back (3 miles in total) and be prepared for rough paths and steps along the way.
