A trail of clues awaits in

Yorkshire Dales

Oh no, it looks like Horrible Hairy has gotten himself into a bit of a pickle! The not-so-bright highwayman thought he was being clever by burying all of his stolen gold deep in the valleys of the Yorkshire Dales. But, as luck would have it, those very same valleys were flooded, taking his treasure with it. Lucky for us, Hairy left behind a treasure map with a series of clues that will lead us to his hidden hoard. The only problem is, we need YOU to solve the clues and uncover the location of this valuable stash!

Hopeful Hunt Through the Yorkshire Dales

Are you ready for an exciting self-guided treasure hunt through the picturesque Yorkshire Dales? As you follow the circular driving Trail, you'll travel through the Bolton Abbey Estate and make stops at Appletreewick, Hebden, Grimwith Reservoir, The Coldstones Cut, Thruscross Reservoir, and Swinsty Reservoir before finishing up in the charming village of Fewston.

Along the way, you'll unravel sneaky clues hidden in existing buildings, permanent features, and intriguing monuments. But beware, Hairy may have set some tricky traps to throw you off the trail. Do you have what it takes to outsmart him and uncover the treasure?

Put on your thinking cap, gather your friends and family, and join the Hopeful Hunt for Horrible Hairy's Hidden Hoard!

More Information:

This circular driving quest will explore the beautiful areas of Lower Wharfedale and the Washburn Valley. Be fully prepared for some muddy footpaths after rain Explorers! You will start and finish near Swinsty and Fewston Reservoirs not far from Blubberhouses, just off the A59 between Harrogate and Skipton.

As the route is circular, you could start your quest at any of the stop off points along the way (Appletreewick, Hebden, Grimwith Reservoir, Coldstones Cut, Thruscross Reservoir and Fewston Reservoir) to then finish up where you began.

*PLEASE NOTE - From 2024, Yorkshire Water are trialling parking charges for their reservoir car parks but a day ticket will cover the parking needed for the Trail. There is also a maximum headroom of 2.1 metres for some of the car parks.

We recommend preparing a picnic for your day. There's also the Brownie Barn cafe just before Appletreewick, two pubs in the village itself, a tea room in Hebden and a pub on the road to the final stop of your quest. There are toilets at the refreshment stops with public toilets in the car park at the start (which is also just a short drive from the finish point).

Mini Explorer Club

We have three super duper themed Clubs for your child to enjoy as part of their Treasure Trail experience.

Perfect for 4-8 year olds, the concept behind the Clubs is that your child will get a bundle of goodies to excite them about their forthcoming Trail experience, something to keep them entertained whilst travelling to and from the Trail, and something to be given on completion of the Trail as a keepsake.
