Viking Treasure Hunt - Fact or Fiction?

Legend has it that in AD 900, the Viking Army of Eric Bloodaxe landed near Chepstow, crossed the Forest of Dean, and set up base at Symonds Yat. Recently, an ancient map has been discovered, rumoured to hold the key to buried Viking treasure. But beware, as your friends at Treasure Trails HQ (TTHQ) warn that modern-day Vikings may also be seeking the treasure and attempting to smuggle it back to Denmark. Are you ready to embark on an adventure and uncover the truth behind this Viking legend?

Explore Symonds Yat and Solve the Mystery

Grab your friends and family and set off on this self-guided treasure hunt through the picturesque town of Symonds Yat. With your trusty Treasure Trail booklet in hand, you'll follow the trail route and solve sneaky clues hidden on existing buildings, permanent features, and monuments. Can you use your skills to uncover the location of the buried treasure before the Danish gang of Vikings?

The Trail starts in Symonds Yat East and takes you on a journey across the river via a hand ferry. From there, you'll follow the river downstream to cross at Brislip Bridge, a suspension footbridge. The route then leads you back upstream, with the option to take a steep footpath up to Yat Rock. Are you ready to take on the challenge and discover the truth behind this Viking treasure?

What is a Treasure Trail?

Before You Set Off

Please Note:

This Trail involves use of a hand ferry and a bridge.

The route follows the edge of the River Wye - it may become muddy in the winter and it is worth checking before you set out that the ferry is running.

The Saracen's Head Inn operates the hand ferry. It is available all year round when the river levels permit from 11.00 am.

If in doubt, please check that the ferry is running and their latest prices by telephoning the Saracen's Head directly on (01600 890435).

Please be aware that parking at Symonds Yat is limited and can be difficult during busy periods.
