Navigating The Route
This is a circular Detective Mystery around Swansea city centre and its historic points, with Detectives helping Chief Inspector Lou Tennant follow the clues after a stagehand from the Grand Theatre has vanished, narrowing down the suspects and evidence.
The investigation covers approximately 2 miles and should take around 2 hours to complete. You'll begin at the back of the Grand Theatre in Singleton Street, next to the bus station, then work through the city centre, Oxford Street, Castle Square, Swansea Castle, Alexandra House and the Alexandra Road area, before heading towards the railway station area and looping back via Portland Street, Park Street and the pedestrianised shopping area.
This Trail is not suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs. It is an urban city-centre route with roads to cross, pedestrian crossings, steps or a ramp between the Magistrates Court and the SCA building, a slope up to the castle and some sections along busy streets.
Take extra care throughout the case, Detectives - Swansea city centre can be very busy, with a lot of traffic and frequent road crossings, including at pedestrian crossings and traffic lights.
Getting There
By car: Start your investigation at the back of the Grand Theatre in Singleton Street, next to the bus station (SA1 3QJ). The recommended place to park your squad car is Oxford Street car park (SA1 3AZ); from there, head to the back of the Grand Theatre in Singleton Street to begin.
By public transport: The start is near the bus station, so make your way there and head for the back of the Grand Theatre in Singleton Street. If travelling by train, you can start at the train station partway through the Trail, and the route can also be started and finished at the railway station.
Need the Loo?
Toilets are available at the train station, making the railway station area the key comfort-stop opportunity during the investigation.
Bring Your Furry Sidekicks
Four-legged Detectives can join the investigation 🐾
This is a busy city-centre case with frequent road crossings, traffic lights, pedestrian crossings, some busy streets, a slope up to the castle and steps or a ramp between the Magistrates Court and the SCA building. Keep canine colleagues close around traffic and take it steadily on the steeper and stepped sections.
Food & Drink Stops
Detective work is hungry business, but Swansea city centre has plenty of chances to stop for refreshments and stock up on snacks along the way.
At the end of the investigation, you can make an optional detour to enjoy a picnic in one of Swansea's parks or on the seafront.
Want to Make a Day of It?
Swansea Castle
The route crosses to Swansea Castle by pedestrian lights and includes time around this historic landmark. There is even an object inspired by 'Rain Cuts The Place We Tread' to look out for nearby, giving your Detectives a suitably atmospheric extra detail once the main evidence has been gathered.
Castle Square
At the end of Oxford Street, the investigation reaches Castle Square. Its large round concrete posts, each marked Castle Square on the top, make this a distinctive city-centre stop and a handy place to pause before the case pushes on.
Alexandra House and Alexandra Road
The route passes Alexandra House, the clock tower, the Science & Art School building and the art gallery opposite, before continuing along Alexandra Road. This section is a strong one for historic buildings and public art, so slow the squad down and enjoy the details when nobody is urgently hunting evidence.
City-Centre Public Art
The investigation also takes you in front of a large mural. For a bit of extra art-world perspective, the largest outdoor mural in the world measures 23,688.7 sq metres and is in Incheon, South Korea; it was painted in 2018 as a communication channel between businesses and residents, intended to improve the negative view of the aged industrial facilities.
Swansea's Historic City Centre
This case leads you around some of the historic buildings and monuments in Swansea city centre, an area described as steeped in history with plenty of shops, cafes and pubs. Once the suspects have been narrowed down, it is worth taking a more relaxed wander without interrogating every post, plaque and suspicious-looking stonework.
