Salisbury - City Centre & Fish Row

Navigating The Route
This is a circular Treasure Hunt through Salisbury's historic city centre, with Adventurers following the clues left behind by notorious highwayman Stan Dandyliver to uncover where he supposedly hid his ill-gotten fortune.

The quest covers approximately 1.6 miles and should take around 1.5 hours to complete. You'll begin on Fish Row, explore Catherine Street and the streets around the old city, venture into Cathedral Close, then weave back through High Street, Minster Street, Blue Boar Row, Winchester Street and Brown Street before returning towards the start.

This Trail is suitable for pushchairs, although slight route deviations may occasionally be needed. It is not suitable for wheelchairs. The terrain is generally level with lowered kerbs, but Salisbury's city-centre layout means you'll encounter plenty of crossroads and road crossings along the way.

Take particular care around traffic and use marked pedestrian crossings wherever possible, keeping Mini Explorers and canine companions close.

Getting There
By car
Park your expedition vehicle at Brown Street car park (SP1 1HE), or use Salisbury's Park & Ride service to reach the city centre.
Your quest begins at Salisbury Information Centre on Fish Row, behind the Guildhall (SP1 1EJ), using ///gender.spine.chair.

By public transport
Make your way into Salisbury city centre, then head for Fish Row behind the Guildhall to begin the adventure. The circular route eventually returns you to the same area once Stan's hiding place has been narrowed down.

Need the Loo?
Comfort-break intel is reassuringly plentiful on this one. Public toilets are signed close to the start point, with further facilities in the department store opposite and next to the cafe in the cathedral.

Four-legged Explorers can join the outdoor quest 🐾
This is mainly a city-centre adventure, with pavements, pedestrian areas and plenty of road crossings. Keep canine companions close around traffic, particularly at the numerous crossroads, and expect busier stretches through the shopping streets and Cathedral Close area.

Food & Drink Stops
Hunting a highwayman's hoard is thirsty work.

There are plenty of places to pick up refreshments and snacks throughout the route, with cafes and other food stops scattered around the city centre. With a relatively short 1.6-mile quest, it's also easy to build a proper refuelling stop into your Salisbury adventure.

Salisbury Cathedral and Cathedral Close
The quest takes you directly into Cathedral Close, so allowing extra time for a proper visit to Salisbury Cathedral is the obvious day-extender. It's also a handy place for facilities and a calmer pause away from the busier shopping streets.

Salisbury's Historic City Centre
The Trail reveals plenty of the city's medieval character, from Fish Row and the Market Place area to old inns, carved details and historic street patterns. Once Stan's treasure has been located, slow things down and explore without having to turn every plaque into a puzzle.

Explore the Medieval Chequers
Salisbury's medieval centre was laid out in square or rectangular blocks known as Chequers, many named after local inns. The route threads through several of these historic streets, making a wander around them a neat extra for Explorers who fancy digging a little deeper into the city's past.
