Before You Set Off

Essential Intel

This is a linear Treasure Hunt, starting at the Monument to the Great Fire of London and ending near Farringdon. The garden needed for Clue 12 is locked at dusk, so leave plenty of daylight to complete the quest.

Navigating The Route

This Treasure Hunt follows the path of the Great Fire of London, with Adventurers tracking clues from Pudding Lane towards Pye Corner to uncover where light-fingered merchant Nick Stuffe hid his stolen church silver.

The quest covers approximately 2 miles and should take around 2 hours to complete. You’ll begin near the Monument, follow old alleys and city streets, pass Guildhall, St Paul’s Cathedral and Paternoster Square, then continue towards Smithfield and Farringdon, where the blaze finally fizzled out.

This Trail is suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs. The route uses city pavements, pedestrian crossings, squares, gardens and alleyways, but expect busy roads, crowded areas and some tighter passages. Keep Mini Explorers close and take your time at crossings.

Getting There

Time to gather your crew and begin the search for Nick Stuffe’s secret stash:

By car - This is a linear city-centre quest, so travelling by public transport is strongly recommended rather than trying to park near both ends.

The Trail starts at the Monument to the Great Fire of London, close to the Fish Street Hill exit of Monument Underground Station (EC4R 9AA), and ends near Farringdon (EC1M 6BY).

By public transport - Start at Monument Underground Station and head for the Monument to the Great Fire of London, close to the Fish Street Hill exit. At the end of the quest, follow Cowcross Street to reach Farringdon Station.

Need the Loo?

Even the boldest Adventurers need a comfort break before chasing silver through 1666 London. Toilets can be found by Clue 10 in One New Change, by Clue 17 in Paternoster Square, and near the end at West Smithfield.

This route includes busy city pavements, narrow alleys, road crossings, squares and gardens. Keep canine companions close throughout, especially around traffic, crowds and tighter passages. City paws may also appreciate a few pauses in the greener squares along the way.

Food & Drink Stops

Treasure hunting through the ashes of old London is thirsty work.

There are cafes and pubs along the route, plus plenty of squares and green spaces where Adventurers can pause for picnic snacks. Cowcross Street near the finish is also handy for well-earned refreshments once Nick Stuffe’s hiding place has been narrowed down.

The Monument

The quest begins at the Monument to the Great Fire of London, right near where the fire started. It’s the perfect extra stop for Adventurers who want to linger over the story of 1666 before following the Trail westwards through the city.

Bank of England Museum

The route passes close to the Bank of England and its museum, making this a strong add-on for curious crews. It fits nicely into the middle of the adventure, especially if your team enjoys money, history and the occasional gold-bar daydream.

Guildhall and Guildhall Art Gallery

Guildhall is one of the most atmospheric stops along the route, and parts of its stone structure survived the Great Fire. The Guildhall Art Gallery area makes a cracking extra visit for Adventurers who want to dig further into London’s civic history.

St Paul’s Cathedral

The quest passes St Paul’s Cathedral, one of the biggest landmarks on the route. It’s well worth turning into a longer visit if your crew has time, especially after following so many clues linked to fire, rebuilding and old London’s changing skyline.

Smithfield and Farringdon

The adventure ends near Smithfield and Farringdon, where people once escaped the fire with their belongings beyond the City walls. It’s a good area to pause after the final clue, refuel, and enjoy the feeling of having safely carried the treasure hunt over the finish line.
