Navigating The Route
This is a circular Treasure Hunt through Waltham Abbey’s historic market town streets and into the Abbey Gardens, with explorers following pavements, clear paths and a few grassy sections as they work to track down King Harold’s lost hoard.
The route follows well maintained pavements and paths throughout, with some flat grassy areas in the gardens, making it suitable for both wheelchairs and pushchairs.
Important: You will be travelling through town centre streets and crossing roads, so explorers should use crossings where available, stay alert to traffic and keep younger adventurers under close supervision at all times. Grass areas may also become a little slippery in wet conditions.
Getting There
By car: Cornmill Car Park (EN9 1RB), Darby Drive (EN9 1EE), and Quaker Lane (EN9 1EP) are all are around a 5-minute walk from the start point.
By public transport: There are regular bus services from Waltham Cross train station or Theobalds Grove station (Weaver Line - Overground) that run to Waltham Abbey.
Need the Loo?
Even the boldest explorers need a quick pit stop! Toilets can be found between Clues 01 and 02 near the start of your quest, making it easy to plan a stop before heading deeper into your search for Harold’s hidden treasure.
Bring Your Furry Sidekicks
Four-legged explorers are welcome on the quest 🐾. With a mix of town streets and open garden areas, it’s a great outing for dogs - just keep leads handy near roads and in busier sections.
Food & Drink Stops
Treasure hunting is hungry work! If you need supplies, the town centre between Clues 05 and 11 is your best bet, with shops and cafés offering everything from quick snacks to morale-boosting treats.
If the weather’s kind, bringing a picnic to enjoy in the Abbey Gardens is a brilliant way to pause and refuel mid-quest.
