Detective Mystery Trail
The Case of the Curiously Un-Orange Chips
Welcome to Bilston, where the batter is bold, the oil is hot… and something smells distinctly fishy. The town is gearing up for its very first Orange Chip Champion Festival, a deep-fried celebration of Black Country brilliance. But just as queues begin to curl around the streets, disaster strikes. The orange chips are all wrong. Pale. Limp. Suspiciously un-orange.
This can only mean one thing: sabotage.
DCI Chris P. Batter of the Frying Squad is on the case and needs sharp-eyed detectives to help crack it. Someone has been meddling with spice mixes, fiddling with frying times and attempting to ruin Bilston’s golden reputation.
Put Your Detective Skills to the Test

Will you save Bilston’s crown jewel from being well and truly burnt, or will this tasty tradition be frittered away forever?

Navigating The Route
This is a circular Detective Mystery through Bilston’s town centre, cultural landmarks, parkland and church surroundings, with sleuths following pavements and clear paths as they work to uncover the orange chip saboteur.
The investigation takes place on pavements and well maintained paths throughout, making it suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs.
Important: You will be travelling through busy town areas and crossing roads at several points, so detectives should use crossings where available, stay alert to traffic and keep younger team members under close supervision at all times.
Getting There
Start outside Bilston Town Hall at the junction of Church Street and Lichfield Street (WV14 0AP).
By car: Nearby free parking can be found at Walsall Street (WV14 6AF), Bow Street (WV14 7NB), Mountford Lane (WV14 6NF) and Hall Street (WV14 0AB).
By public transport: Bilston is well served by local bus routes, and the tram network runs nearby, making it easy to reach the town centre without a car.
Need the Loo?
Even top detectives need a comfort break during a long case! Toilets can be found in Hickman Park and, for customers, in Morrisons near Clue 16.
Bring Your Furry Sidekicks
Four-legged detectives are welcome on the case 🐾. With a mix of town streets and parkland, it is a suitable outing for canine companions - just keep leads handy near roads and in busier areas.
Food & Drink Stops
Cracking this case is hungry work! There are plenty of places to grab snacks near the start and end of the Trail, including local spots serving the famous orange chips.
You can also bring a picnic to enjoy in Hickman Park (Clues 10 to 12) or in the nature reserve after Clue 16 for a well-earned break mid-investigation.
Want to Make a Day of It?
Parkland Patrols and Green Spaces
Hickman Park offers a great stretch to pause, recharge and let younger detectives burn off some energy before continuing the case.
