Potholes and Plunder: A Tonbridge Treasure Tangle
Something strange is (re)surfacing in Tonbridge...
Along the River Medway, curious long lost objects have started reappearing - old coins, regal cutlery and tattered scraps of parchment. Experts believe they're linked to the 1215 siege of Tonbridge Castle and a local Lord's long-lost fortune: the Tonbridge Trove.
But beware! Workers from a government department are set on recycling any scrap they can get their hands on. They want to use the Trove to restore Tonbridge's highways and byways and are racing to find it first. They plan to melt the hoard down and use it to patch Tonbridge's potholes. Can YOU recover it before the High Street ends up shinier than a polished golden crown on a midsummer day?
Retrieve the Tonbridge Trove, before it's too late!
Prepare for an exciting self-guided Treasure Hunt through Tonbridge's historic streets, riverside paths and castle grounds. Beginning outside Tonbridge station, your quest will lead you through town, beside the River Medway, around Tonbridge Castle and back through parks and gardens.
Follow the clues, dodge the road-filling workers and eliminate empty map locations one by one until only the Trove's true hiding place remains. Expect a mostly paved route with some narrow paths, steep hills and plenty of riverside intrigue.
Are you ready to track down the Lord's missing treasure before it becomes blingy pothole fodder?

Before You Set Off
Before You Set Off
Navigating The Route
This is a circular Treasure Hunt through Tonbridge’s town centre, riverside paths and castle grounds, with explorers following pavements, footpaths and a few narrower sections as they work to recover Lord Dunruly’s long-lost trove before the ROTTERS get there first.
The route is mostly paved but includes some narrow paths and steep hills, so it is not suitable for wheelchairs.
Important: Some areas of the route run close to the River Medway and may be prone to flooding, so it’s best to check the weather forecast before setting off. You will also encounter roads and busier sections, so explorers should use crossings where available, stay alert at all times and keep younger adventurers under close supervision.
Please also note that events at Tonbridge Castle may occasionally block access to certain clue locations, so it’s worth checking ahead.
Getting There
By car: Sovereign Way North Car Park (TN9 1RS) is a good value option, around a 10-minute walk from the start. There are closer car parks available, but these may be more expensive.
By public transport: Tonbridge Railway Station is right at the start of your adventure, making this an easy quest to reach by train or bus.
Need the Loo?
Toilets can be found at Priory Road, between Clues 04 and 05, again near the castle, between Clues 11 and 12, and later at Racecourse Park, near Clues 16 and 18, giving you several well-timed opportunities to pause during your quest.
Bring Your Furry Sidekicks
Four-legged explorers are welcome on the quest.
With a mix of town streets, riverside paths and open areas, it’s a great outing for dogs - just keep leads handy near roads, water and busier sections.
Food & Drink Stops
If you’re planning to stock up, the town centre between Clues 05 and 08 is your best bet, with shops and cafés ready to provide supplies and morale-boosting treats.
If the weather’s kind, the riverside or castle grounds make brilliant picnic spots for a mid-quest break.
Want to Make a Day of It?
Riverside Wandering and Hidden Waterways
The River Medway runs through the heart of your quest, with scenic paths and hidden streams adding atmosphere to your treasure hunt.
Castle Grounds and Historic Views
Tonbridge Castle provides a dramatic centrepiece to your adventure, with centuries of history watching over your search.
If access isn’t restricted by events, you can take time to explore the castle grounds or even climb the mound for great views. There are no clues there, but it’s a brilliant extra stop before continuing your quest.
