What is a Treasure Trail?

Before You Set Off

Before you set off on your awesome adventure, there are a few things you need to know...

Discover the wonderful world of chocolate and sweets in the heart of York, the chocolate city. Now deeply entrenched in the history of York, the confectionery story began as far back as the 18th-century. As York's sweet story unfolds, you will see a grand selection of the city's architecture and historical attractions. Starting at the centrally located York's Chocolate Story you will head into the vibrant marketplace, through the buzzing cafe and bar-filled winding streets of Petergate, Swinegate and Stonegate. You'll then be led past the Mansion House, along the shopper's haven that is Coney Street, round past the monumental Clifford's Tower, up the cobbled, olde worlde street that is The Shambles before returning to where you began your investigation.

The route is friendly for wheelchair users and pushchairs.

Bring your four-legged friends along! Please note that it is a busy city centre, so dogs will need to be kept on leads.

The closest long stay pay and display car park to the Trail start point is at Foss Bank (YO31 7PL), just a ten-minute walk away. Or why not try York's Park and Ride service?

There are some fantastic events in York's calendar, all of which are great times to visit this beautiful city. However, you may find that some of the clues on this Trail may become obstructed or difficult to access on these occasions. If you would like further information about event dates, please contact York Tourist Information.

There are public toilets available in the Coppergate Shopping Centre, near Clue 11. The route passes several pubs, restaurants, cafes and snack shops along the way.

Why not make a day of it and visit some sweet attractions, like York's Chocolate Story, or sign up for a chocolate workshop at York Cocoa House? If you fancy another challenge, you could tackle one of the other Trails in our York collection!
