Navigating The Route

This is a circular Treasure Hunt around Wolsingham Riverside & Churchyard, with Explorers taking up wealthy adventurer Amazonia Jones' unfinished quest to find the Hermit's Casket by following Saint Godric's clues around Wolsingham to uncover where the hidden treasure trove is concealed.

The quest covers approximately 2 miles and should take around 2.5 hours to complete. You'll set off from Demesne Mill Picnic Area, explore Wolsingham village, search around the Market Place, follow sections by the river bank and recreation area, and investigate the churchyard before looping back towards the start.

This Trail is not suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs. The route includes downhill steps and cobbles, and later on you should walk in single file where the pavement is narrow.

There are road crossings along the way, and you need to cross the main road several times with care. Keep younger treasure seekers close, especially near the river section in the middle of the Trail.

Getting There

By car: Start your quest at Demesne Mill Picnic Area, signposted from the B6296 (DL13 3DG). You can park your expedition vehicle here.

By public transport: Make your way to Demesne Mill Picnic Area, signposted from the B6296 (DL13 3DG), to begin the treasure hunt. The circular route brings you back to the car park area once the casket's hiding place has been narrowed down.

Need the Loo?

Public toilets are 50m from the Market Place. From the car park, turn right at the road and walk for five minutes, then return to the car park before launching fully into the quest.

The route includes road crossings, downhill steps, cobbles, narrow pavement sections and a stretch near the river, so keep canine companions close around traffic, water and tighter walking spots.

Food & Drink Stops

Treasure hunting around Wolsingham calls for proper supplies. There are cafes and shops in the Market Place, making it a handy place to refuel or stock up during the adventure.

If you'd rather bring your own provisions, the river bank and recreation area are both described as great spots for a picnic.

Wolsingham Village Centre and Market Place

The Trail explores Wolsingham, a village in Weardale described as a pretty town to discover while you search for treasure. The Market Place is a useful hub too, with cafes and shops nearby and public toilets 50m away.

The River Bank and Recreation Area

The quest passes the river bank and a recreation area, both described as great spots for a picnic. They make natural places to pause midway through the treasure hunt, with plenty of scope to enjoy the riverside setting while younger Explorers recharge.

St Mary and St Stephen Church

St Mary and St Stephen Church was originally built in the 11th century. The only part still standing from that time is the tower, while the main part of the church was rebuilt in Victorian times. Look out for the difference in stonework between the two parts as you investigate.

Wolsingham Baptist Church and the Wesley Connection

John Wesley came to Weardale in the 18th century and sometimes preached in fields, using a rough stone pulpit behind this house. The Trail notes the area as part of the story of early Methodism, adding another layer of local history to Amazonia Jones' treasure-filled trail.
