Secret Spy Mission Trail
Operation: Phantom Line
Rumblings beneath West Calder have sparked HQ’s suspicions... and it's not just the trains. A criminal mastermind known as The Signalman is on the verge of reactivating a long-lost Cold War locomotive - turning it into a mobile spy base.
Your mission? Follow the Trail through this historic West Lothian village, crack the code hidden in clues left by a local mole, and uncover the launch location before the Phantom Train roars back to life.
Spy Mission in Historic West Calder
Begin your mission in the heart of West Calder, beneath the watchful eye of the town’s iconic clock. From there, follow secret paths and hidden routes, picking up intel by solving clues on historic landmarks, old kirk ruins, and mysterious wartime memorials. Navigate twisting backstreets, coded signage, and curious rooftops as you uncover the Phantom Train’s buried secrets.
Your final approach takes you full circle back to Union Square, where one last intel drop could make or break the mission.
Do YOU have what it takes to decode the clues and stop The Signalman’s runaway plan?

Before You Set Off
Before You Set Off
Before you set off on your awesome adventure, there are a few things you need to know...
Although there are only slight inclines and dropped kerbs are available at or near crossing points, several narrow pavements along the route make this Trail potentially hard to navigate for wheelchair and pushchair users. There is one step up to a clue, which can be avoided via side access to the church grounds.
Bring your four-legged friends along, but please note that some of the route is along the main road through the village, so they'll be on leads for most of the mission but can have a run around in the park at the halfway point.
Free parking is available on Dickson Street, a short walk from the start (EH55 8DZ), or head to West Calder by bus or train.
Public toilets are available at the West Calder Community Hub (Mon-Fri daytime / Sat a.m.) on Dickson Street, close to the parking and halfway point. There are also a small number of pubs and cafés in the village centre near the start and end point.
An optional detour to the Community Gardens & Woodlands is suggested in the Trail - enjoy it midway through or drive to it after you've finished.
