What is a Treasure Trail?

Before You Set Off

Navigating The Route

This is a circular Detective Mystery through Wareham’s town centre, riverside paths and along Alfred the Great’s ancient walls, with sleuths following pavements, grassy banks and elevated wall-top paths as they piece together what really happened at the dig site.

The investigation includes uneven ground, grassy sections, steps and stretches along the top of the town walls, so it is not suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs.

⚠️ Important: You will be travelling along roads with no pavements, narrow sections and areas close to open water, as well as elevated paths along the walls, so detectives should stay alert at all times, walk carefully and keep younger team members under close supervision.

Take extra care on slopes, steps and uneven ground, and keep a safe distance from the water’s edge when patrolling riverside stretches.

Getting There

Time to assemble your squad and open the case file:

By car: The Quay Car Park (BH20 4LP) is the closest option to the start of your investigation, with St John’s Hill (BH20 4LZ) as an alternative nearby.

By public transport: Wareham is served by train and local bus routes, with the town centre within walking distance of transport links.

Your investigation begins outside the Library and Information Centre on South Street (BH20 4LR) - so step into position and start scanning for your first clue straight away.

Need the Loo?

Even top detectives need a comfort break during a long case!

Toilets are available at the start and again at the finish of your investigation, so it’s worth planning ahead before heading out along the walls and deeper into the case.

Bring Your Furry Sidekicks

Four-legged detectives are welcome on the case 🐾

With a mix of town streets, grassy walls and riverside paths, it’s a great outing for canine companions - just keep leads handy near roads, livestock areas and along the water.

Food & Drink Stops

Cracking this case is hungry work!

Opportunities to grab refreshments are limited until later in the investigation (after Clue 16), so it’s a good idea to bring snacks and drinks with you to keep your detective brains ticking over.

At the end of the Trail, the quay or town walls make excellent picnic spots for a well-earned break once the case is cracked.

Want to Make a Day of It?

Ancient Walls and Historic Patrol Routes

Wareham’s Saxon walls form a unique part of your investigation, offering elevated views and a real sense of walking through history as you follow the trail.

Riverside Paths and Quiet Corners

The River Frome adds a scenic and atmospheric stretch to your case, with peaceful waterside paths perfect for regrouping and reviewing your notes.

Churches, History and Hidden Stories

From St Martin’s-on-the-Walls to the Priory Church of Lady St Mary, Wareham is packed with fascinating history - making it the perfect setting for a mystery where the past refuses to stay buried.
