More Information:
Essential Intel
This is a linear mission, Agents. It starts outside Mansion House Station on Garlick Hill and does not return to the start; it finishes by City Hall and the Tower Bridge area.
The clue by Cannon Street station can be found even when the station is closed.
Navigating The Route
This is a linear Spy Mission through the Mansion House & Hall Dick Whittington Area, with Agents helping the Mayor by following clues around the area to crack the code and lift Dick Whittington's ghostly curse from the doors of the old City Hall.
The operation covers approximately 1.5 miles and should take around 1.5 hours to complete. You'll begin outside Mansion House Station on Garlick Hill, investigate Whittington Garden on College Street, work past Cannon Street station, Old Billingsgate Market and St Dunstan's Hill, follow the path around The Tower of London, cross the Thames via Tower Bridge, then finish by City Hall and the Tower Bridge area.
This Trail is not suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs. The route includes steps, road crossings and some uphill sections, as well as a hill, cobbles near the end and a path around the Tower of London.
Use pedestrian crossings wherever possible, watch out for cyclists and other road users, and take extra care when crossing the Thames via Tower Bridge. There are also steps up to road level before the St Katharine Docks underpass.
Getting There
By car: Begin the mission outside Mansion House Station on Garlick Hill (EC4V 2BA).
By public transport: Start outside Mansion House Station, reached via the London Underground on the District or Circle lines. From there, your mission heads steadily east towards City Hall and the Tower Bridge area.
Need the Loo?
There are toilet stops available at Clue 06, Clues 12-13 and at the end of the mission.
Bring Your Furry Sidekicks
Four-legged Agents are welcome to join the operation 🐾
The route includes road crossings, cyclists and other road users, steps, uphill sections, cobbles near the end and the Thames crossing over Tower Bridge. Keep canine recruits close around traffic, busy riverside areas, steps and the bridge.
Food & Drink Stops
There are chances to stop for refreshments and stock up on snacks, particularly around stations.
If your squad prefers to bring its own supplies, you can have a picnic in the gardens at Clue 03 or along the Thames Path.
Want to Make a Day of It?
Whittington Garden
The route enters Whittington Garden on College Street, making it a fitting pause for Agents caught up in a Dick Whittington-themed case. One of the clues is found here too, so keep your spy senses switched on while you enjoy the garden.
St Dunstan in the East
St Dunstan in the East is a point of interest on the route, where the mission asks you to study the Lord Mayor's plaque. Once the intel is gathered, it is worth taking a little longer to look around before moving on.
Tower Bridge
The mission crosses the Thames via Tower Bridge and includes three clues on the bridge. It also comes with a cracking piece of real-life drama: on 5th April 1968, a Hawker Hunter jet plane was flown through its spans in an unauthorised stunt as a political protest by RAF pilot Alan Pollock.
The Tower of London
The route follows the path around The Tower of London before heading on to Tower Bridge, then later reaches the underpass to Tower Hill station nearby. It is a standout stretch for Agents who like their code-cracking with a heavy dose of historic atmosphere.
Old Billingsgate Market
Old Billingsgate Market sits along the route before the mission crosses Lower Thames Street and heads up St Dunstan's Hill. It is another useful landmark to linger by once you are not quite so busy hunting for curse-lifting clues.
