Navigating The Route

This is a circular Treasure Hunt around Tipton's Industrial Heartland, with Explorers following the search for William Perry's supposedly buried fortune in Tipton, using old clues and a recovered map to try to locate his hidden gold and jewels.

The quest covers approximately 2 miles and should take around 2 hours to complete. You'll explore mostly urban streets and canal towpaths, starting from the shopper's car parks in the town centre on Albion Street, tracking clues along footpaths, towpaths and park paths, heading into Victoria Park, passing places including The Old Bush Bar and Grill and Mad O'Rourkes, then continuing towards Coronation Gardens and the William Perry statue before looping back towards the start.

This Trail is wheelchair accessible and pushchair accessible. There are two steps into Coronation Gardens, but there is another entrance further round the park for step-free access.

The route includes busy roads at times, traffic on road sections, canal towpaths beside water and locks, and cyclists may be encountered on the towpath. Keep Mini Explorers close around roads, water and locks, and take care on narrow or busy sections.

Getting There

By car: Start your expedition from the shopper's car parks in the town centre on Albion Street (DY4 8QG). These are recommended for the Trail and offer free parking for your expedition vehicle.

By public transport: Make your way to the shopper's car parks in the town centre on Albion Street (DY4 8QG) to begin the quest. The circular route returns towards Union Street and the start once William Perry's hidden fortune has been tracked down.

Need the Loo?

Public toilets are available in the town centre, so it is worth making a comfort stop before your band of Explorers gets too deep into the industrial heartland.

Bring Your Furry Sidekicks

We are currently unaware of any specific restrictions for dogs on this Trail, and whilst most of our Trails can be enjoyed with dogs, those in towns and cities may be less suitable due to traffic and a lack of open spaces. 🐾

You may also encounter restricted access to parks etc. If four-legged Explorers join you, keep them close around busy roads, traffic, canal towpaths beside water and locks, and watch out for cyclists on the towpath.

Food & Drink Stops

Treasure-hunting through Tipton's industrial heartland is hungry work. There are chances to stop for refreshments and stock up on snacks at the beginning and end of the Trail.

If you are bringing your own provisions, you can picnic along the canal or in the park at the end of the quest.

Want to Make a Day of It?

Victoria Park

The route goes into Victoria Park, following the tarmac path towards the playground and on to the water's edge by the railings. It is also a handy place to pause for a picnic at the end of the quest once the clues have been cracked.

Tipton's Canal Towpaths

A good stretch of the adventure follows canal towpaths, giving Explorers a waterside flavour of Tipton's industrial heartland. Take your time along these sections, staying alert beside the water and locks and making room for cyclists on the towpath.

Coronation Gardens

This small park appears near the end of the route and makes a gentler final green stop before the Trail loops back. There are two steps to negotiate, but there is another entrance further round the park for step-free access.

William Perry Statue

Near the end of the Trail, look out for the statue of William Perry, the hero of the story. It is a fitting final landmark for a Treasure Hunt wrapped around Tipton's tale of buried gold and jewels.
