The Mysterious Disappearance of Rowan Merrilee

It was a dark and stormy night when Rowan Merrilee, a beloved boatman and champion home brewer, mysteriously disappeared. The next morning, a tatty old map covered in scribbles was found in the river by expert angler, Rod N'Tackle. The Intrepid Explorer Society believes that the scribbles are actually a series of clues hidden throughout the villages along the Tees Valley. Will YOU be able to follow the clues and uncover the truth behind Rowan's disappearance?

Treasure Hunt Through the Tees Valley

Embark on an exciting self-guided treasure hunt through the picturesque villages of the Tees Valley. As you follow the Trail route, keep your eyes peeled for sneaky clues hidden on existing buildings, permanent features, and monuments. Can YOU solve the clues and discover the location of the buried treasure?

Your adventure begins in the charming village of Croft-on-Tees, with its scenic church nestled on the banks of the Tees. The Trail then takes you through the pretty villages of Hurworth, Neasham, Middleton One Row, and Egglescliffe, and even includes a short section of the Teesdale Way. Please note that this Trail is an updated version of the Hurworth to Egglesciffe Driving Trail.

What is a Treasure Trail?

Before You Set Off

Navigating The Route

This is a driving and walking Treasure Hunt along the Tees Valley, guiding explorers through a series of villages including Croft-on-Tees, Hurworth, Neasham, Middleton One Row and Egglescliffe.

You’ll travel between locations by car, with short walks at each stop along pavements, village lanes and countryside paths. Some paths can become muddy, and there are sections without pavements and a few steps to navigate, so it is not suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs. Sensible footwear is strongly recommended.

Getting There

Time to gather your explorers and begin the quest:

Monkend Terrace, Croft-on-Tees (DL2 2SG) - Park near St Peter’s Church to begin your adventure.

From here, you’ll follow Rowan’s trail between villages by car, stopping to explore at each location.

Need the Loo?

Plan ahead before setting off on this expedition!

There are no public toilets along the route, so your best option is to use facilities in pubs at each village stop.

Bring Your Furry Sidekicks

Four-legged explorers are welcome on the quest.

With a mix of village walks and countryside paths, it’s a great outing for dogs - just keep leads handy near roads, livestock and along narrower routes.

Food & Drink Stops

You’re in luck — this Trail is practically fuelled by pubs!

Each village stop offers a pub for refreshments, and there’s also a convenience store in Hurworth (near Clue 09) for stocking up on supplies.

IES recommend bringing a picnic to enjoy in Neasham or Egglescliffe, both of which offer lovely spots to pause and refuel along the way.

Want to Make a Day of It?

Riverside Routes & Tees Valley Views

Following the Teesdale Way, this Trail offers scenic stretches along the River Tees, with peaceful countryside views and plenty of spots to soak up the landscape.

Village History & Local Stories

Each stop along the route has its own character, from historic churches to tales of weavers, mathematicians and even literary links (yes, Lewis Carroll makes an appearance!).

Pubs, Greens & Relaxed Exploring

With village greens, riverside paths and welcoming pubs dotted throughout, this is a great Trail to take at a relaxed pace - perfect for turning your treasure hunt into a full day out.
