Navigating The Route

This is a circular Detective Mystery around Swanage’s town centre and coastline, with Detectives helping DCI Watt A. Racket investigate the suspicious collapse of lead singer Hokee Kokee, just before Loud and the Shouties’ first gig.

The case covers approximately 1.5 miles and should take around 2+ hours to complete. You’ll investigate the seafront, Mowlem Theatre area, Swanage Museum and Heritage Centre, the pier approach, High Street, church surroundings, Swanage Station area and the war memorial before looping back towards the start.

This Trail is not suitable for wheelchairs, but it is suitable for pushchairs. Expect pavements, town streets, gentle slopes, road crossings and coastal sections. Later on, there are steps or a slope up to the war memorial, so pushchair squads may want to use the gentler option.

Take extra care near the harbour and waterside stretches. The harbour is deep and open, so keep younger Detectives and canine colleagues well back from the edge, especially if anyone starts doing the hokey-cokey too close to the water.

Getting There

By car - Begin making inquiries beside the Tourist Information Centre, facing the sea on Shore Road (BH19 1LB), using ///broom.downcast.churn.

Several pay and display car parks are close by. Out of season, free parking may also be available along the seafront and on some roads behind the beach huts, but check local restrictions before leaving the squad car.

By public transport - Make your way to Swanage town centre or seafront, then head for the Tourist Information Centre on Shore Road to begin the investigation.

Need the Loo?

Even sharp-eyed Detectives need a comfort break before a full-volume investigation. Public toilets are available near the pier, so there’s a handy option early in the case and close to the seafront action.

This route includes seafront paths, town pavements, road crossings, church surroundings, station areas and harbour-side sections. Keep dogs close throughout, especially near traffic, the deep harbour, coastal edges and busier visitor spots. Any sniffer dog tempted by seagulls, suspects or suspiciously musical fish should be kept firmly beside the squad.

Food & Drink Stops

Solving a seaside sound-system scandal can leave the whole squad peckish.

You’ll find plenty of cafes, snack stops and shops around the investigation area. Alternatively, bring supplies and enjoy a well-earned picnic on the beach once the culprit has been unmasked and Swanage has been restored to blessed peace and quiet.

Swanage Beach and Pier

The seafront is an easy way to extend your day, with beach time, sea views and the pier area close to the start of the investigation. It’s a classic Swanage add-on, especially if your Detectives fancy chips, fresh air and a proper seaside breather after the case.

Swanage Museum and Heritage Centre

The route passes the Swanage Museum and Heritage Centre, making it a neat extra stop for curious Detectives. It’s ideal for digging deeper into local history before heading back out to chase more clues along the coast.

Swanage Railway

Swanage Station gives the Trail a strong heritage railway flavour. The branch line closed in 1972, but determined volunteers brought it back to life, and heritage trains now run between Swanage and Norden. A splendid day-stretcher for steam fans and whistle-happy Mini-Detectives.

Durlston Country Park

Durlston Country Park sits beyond the main Trail and makes a cracking extra adventure if your squad wants more walking, views and fresh air. The area has a wonderfully odd past too, including an old animal attraction with parrots, guinea pigs, snakes and Sheila the gibbon.

The Mowlem Theatre

The case begins close to the Mowlem Theatre area, and it’s worth checking what’s on if you’re planning a fuller Swanage day. After solving a mystery about a vanished voice, catching a show feels suspiciously appropriate.
