Embark on a thrilling adventure with family and friends as you follow in the footsteps of the notorious pirate, Gibraltar Jack. Legend has it that during a fierce storm in 1785, Jack attempted to land his stolen treasure on the beach of Skegness. But what exactly was in this massive hoard? The town's fishermen were overjoyed and danced in celebration, until Jack ordered them away and disappeared into town with his belongings, never to be seen again.
Recently, a worn map was discovered in the walls of a house known as Jack's Shack. Only skilled explorers like YOU will be able to uncover if this map holds the key to buried riches. But beware, time is of the essence before someone else beats you to it!

Look no further than this self-guided Treasure Hunt Trail that will take you on a journey through the town's beautiful Tower Gardens and along the promenade. As you solve the clever clues hidden on existing buildings, permanent features, and monuments, you'll uncover the location of the buried treasure.
Starting at the Embassy Theatre, the Trail will lead you on a circular route through the Tower Gardens and St Matthew's Church. From there, you'll continue along the promenade and past the pier, taking in the picturesque seaside views before finishing at the Clock Tower.

Navigating The Route
This is a circular Treasure Hunt around Skegness Gardens and Promenade, with Adventurers following the trail of Gibraltar Jack, a notorious pirate and smuggler who is said to have lost a hidden hoard in Skegness, in search of the buried riches before anyone else beats them to it.
The quest covers approximately 2 miles and should take 2+ hours to complete. You'll begin at the entrance to Tower Gardens, opposite the Embassy Theatre on Grand Parade, then explore the gardens, head towards the pier and seafront, continue beside the beach and along the North Bracing promenade, navigate around the boating lake, pass the Rockery Gardens and return to the start area via Tower Esplanade and Grand Parade.
This Trail is suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs. The route uses clear paths and pavements around the town, with a section near the beach, plus a ramp or steps to reach the North Bracing promenade and a slope back towards Tower Esplanade at the end.
Take care when crossing roads, including crossing over the end of Ida Road and using the pedestrian crossing over Grand Parade. Keep Mini Explorers close around the boating lake too.
Getting There
By car: Begin your treasure hunt at the entrance to Tower Gardens, opposite the Embassy Theatre on Grand Parade (PE25 2UL). Scarborough Avenue car park (PE25 2TB) is the nearest car park to the start. If Scarborough Avenue is full, use Pierside on Grand Parade (PE25 2UE), or the Festival car park accessed via Princes Parade (PE25 3HH) if the nearer car parks are full.
By public transport: Make your way to the entrance to Tower Gardens, opposite the Embassy Theatre on Grand Parade, to begin the quest. The circular route returns to the start area via Tower Esplanade and Grand Parade.

Comfort stops are available in Tower Gardens at the start, at Pier Amusements after Clue 08, and on Tower Esplanade near Clue 10.
Bring Your Furry Sidekicks

The route includes town pavements, road crossings, a beach section, the boating lake area and a chance to go and chat to the donkeys, so keep canine companions close where needed and take extra care around traffic, water and animals.
Food & Drink Stops
Pirate-hoard hunting is hungry work, but there are plenty of snack and refreshment opportunities en route.
If you'd rather pack your own provisions, you can plan a picnic for the beach at Clue 09. There is also a grassy area later in the route where you can pause before continuing the search.

Tower Gardens
The adventure begins at the entrance to Tower Gardens, then heads into the gardens through the archway. It's a handy place to settle your crew before setting off, with toilets available at the start, plus a bandstand and a pavilion to spot as your pirate quest gets under way.
Skegness Pier
Skegness Pier opened in June 1881 and was once the fourth longest in England at 1,844ft (562m). The end section used to be T-shaped with a concert hall, but after storm damage in 1978 and a fire in 1985, the pier is now 387ft (118m) long. Plans were put in place in 2021 to rebuild it to its original length.
The Beach and North Bracing Promenade
The route reaches the seafront and then the North Bracing promenade beside the beach, making this a natural family stop on the way round. Bring buckets and spades, pause for a picnic at Clue 09, or even enjoy a paddle before getting back on Gibraltar Jack's trail.
The RNLI Lifeboat Station
The quest passes the lifesavers' station on the promenade. The RNLI was founded in 1824 and now has 238 stations around the country, operating 444 lifeboats, with an average of 22 rescues every day - impressive intel for young Explorers with an eye on the waves.
The Rockery Gardens
Later in the hunt, you'll head on to The Rockery Gardens as part of the promenade area, reached after crossing the road beyond the boating lake. It's a pleasant spot to slow the pace before the final push back towards Tower Esplanade.
