Treasure Hunt Trail
Mud, Marshes and a Misguided Naturalist!
It's a right muddy mystery! The lesser-known naturalist Chuck Darlose has left Essex in a flap once again after rumours resurfaced about his long-lost treasure from the ill-fated HMS Poodle. From crates of glittering goodies to curious clues scattered between the Rivers Crouch and Roach, excitement is rising faster than the local tide! Now it's up to YOU to outwit the marshes, crack Chuck's cryptic riddles and track down the Poodle's prize before some gull gets to it first...
Treasure Hunt Through the Roach & Crouch Country
Fancy a fun day out for family and friends in the wilds of South Essex? This self-guided driving adventure leads you through Ashingdon, Paglesham East End, Paglesham Church End, Canewdon and even out onto a slice of Wallasea Island. You'll travel by car between stops (snacks recommended!), then hop out to solve clever clues hidden on buildings, monuments, information boards and riverside features. It's the perfect blend of scenic exploring and puzzle-cracking, with plenty of spots for photos, picnics and pub stops.
So, can YOU follow in Chuck Darlose's steps and uncover the final resting place of the HMS Poodle's treasure?

Navigational Advice
This is a driving Trail, with short bursts of exploring on foot at each stop - from village greens to churchyards to marshy embankments. Most paths are well-trodden gravel or firm surfaces, though a couple of narrow stretches and embankment steps near the rivers mean it’s not suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs. But for determined treasure hunters, it’s pretty smooth sailing (well... smoother than Chuck Darlose managed on HMS Poodle!).
Bring Your Furry Sidekicks
Chuck Darlose was rarely without a muddy boot print or a curious creature at his heels, so four-legged sidekicks are more than welcome on this quest! There are plenty of good sniff-spots around Ashingdon and Canewdon, plus wide-open air and estuary breezes at Paglesham Eastend and Wallasea Island. Just keep pups on leads where livestock and wildlife are present, and always check local signs.
Parking Sorted!
Each leg of the Trail includes designated parking or simple pull-ins, so you can hop between stops with ease:
- Ashingdon Memorial Hall (SS4 3HF) - Free parking at the Trail starting point.
- Paglesham Eastend (SS4 2EQ) - Field parking opposite the Plough & Sail pub.
- Paglesham Churchend (SS4 2DP) - Parking by the Punch Bowl pub or near the church itself.
- Canewdon Village Green (SS4 3QQ) - Handy roadside parking.
- Wallasea Island RSPB Reserve (SS4 2HD) - Car park beside the final clues where there is a small charge. PLEASE NOTE - The gates close at sunset (8pm summer).

- Nearby pubs (Plough & Sail, Punch Bowl, etc.) - Grabbing a bite to eat and using the loo is win-win.
Want to Make a Day of It?
History at Every Turn
St Andrew's Church in Ashingdon stands on a hill where battles were fought, kings perished and longboats once sailed - keep an eye out for references to King Cnut and check out the model ship gifted by Prince Georg of Denmark.
Sailors, Smugglers & Salty Stories
Paglesham Eastend has centuries of maritime mischief under its belt - from oystering dynasties to whispered tales of smuggling along Paglesham Reach. If only HMS Poodle had docked here instead of the Beagle…
Wildlife & Waterside Wandering
Wallasea Island RSPB Reserve is a bird-spotter’s paradise, filled with lagoons, marshland and vast estuary views created using soil from London’s Crossrail tunnels. It’s the perfect place to stretch your legs, admire the wilderness and imagine Chuck Darlose tripping over yet another muddy puddle.
Sailors' Stop-Off at Essex Marina
Essex Marina is a lively hub of riverside bustle, where sleek yachts bob on the water and salty breezes sweep in from the River Crouch. With views across the estuary and boats of every shape and size drifting past, it's the perfect spot to pause, breathe in the sea air and picture Chuck Darlose frantically trying to moor HMS Poodle without falling in - again. Enjoy the scenery, snap a few photos, grab a bite to eat and soak up the coastal charm after completing your search for the treasure!
