Portree

The sun is shining, the sea is glistening, and the village of Portree is buzzing with excitement. But amidst the idyllic scenery and charming buildings, a notorious cat burglar is wreaking havoc. Ruby Diamond has been using the local legends and myths to cover up her crimes, but now she's made a mistake. In her haste to escape, she dropped a map to her hidden stash. The Exploration Society needs the help of top adventurers (that's YOU!) to follow the clues and unearth her ill-gotten gains. Are you up for the challenge?

More Information:

Navigating The Route

This is a circular Treasure Hunt through Portree’s colourful harbour, village square and surrounding streets, with explorers following pavements, paths and a few hillier sections as they track down Ruby Diamond’s hidden hoard.

There are steps and a couple of steeper climbs along the way, so it is not suitable for wheelchairs, but generally manageable for pushchairs with care and a few detours (or possibly a bit of teamwork on the trickier bits!). Take care on slopes, steps and near roads as you navigate the route.

Getting There

Time to gather your explorers and begin the quest:

Portree Bayfield Long Stay Car Park (IV51 9EZ) - Your expedition base, clearly signposted as you approach from the south.

You’ll be on foot from here, so take care crossing the car park as you head off in search of your first clue.

Need the Loo?

Even the boldest adventurers need a quick pit stop!

Toilets can be found: Near Clue 02, early in your quest - perfect timing to settle any pre-adventure nerves!

Bring Your Furry Sidekicks

Four-legged explorers are welcome on the quest.

With town streets, harbour paths and open areas to explore, it’s a great outing for dogs - just keep leads handy near roads and along the waterfront.

Food & Drink Stops

You’ll be well looked after on this adventure!

There are plenty of cafés, pubs and restaurants around the harbour and square, especially between Clues 12–16, making it easy to refuel mid-quest.

If the weather’s kind, it’s also a great place to pause for a picnic with harbour views while plotting your next move.

Want to Make a Day of It?

Harbour Views & Colourful Streets

Portree’s iconic harbour, with its row of brightly painted houses, is one of the most photographed spots on Skye - and a brilliant place to soak up the atmosphere once your treasure hunt is complete.

Apothecary’s Tower & Scenic Detour

If you fancy stretching your legs, take the optional stroll to “The Lump”, where the Apothecary’s Tower stands watch over the town. It’s a peaceful loop with fantastic views and a touch of local history.

Highland History & Local Legends

From royal visits to ghostly tales and clan connections, Portree is packed with stories. Keep your eyes and ears open - in a place like this, you never know what might surface next.

Mini Explorer Club

We have three super duper themed Clubs for your child to enjoy as part of their Treasure Trail experience.

Perfect for 4-8 year olds, the concept behind the Clubs is that your child will get a bundle of goodies to excite them about their forthcoming Trail experience, something to keep them entertained whilst travelling to and from the Trail, and something to be given on completion of the Trail as a keepsake.
