Navigating The Route

This is a circular Detective Mystery around Oldmeldrum, with Detectives helping Chief Superintendent Ivanta Crackadiscase investigate what happened to world-famous archaeologist Barry D. Hatchet after his dig uncovered something dangerously inconvenient.

The case covers approximately 1.75 miles and should take around 2 hours to complete. You’ll follow clues from Market Square and the Town Hall, past Morris’s Hotel, along Urquhart Road, King Street, Distillery Road, Park Road, Keil Brae, Meldrum Parish Church, Kirk Brae, Albert Road, the Community Woodland and South Road.

This Trail is not suitable for wheelchairs, and is best treated as not suitable for pushchairs, especially after wet weather. Most of the route follows pavements and paths, but a few more rural sections head slightly off the beaten track. Keep younger Detectives close near roads, crossings, narrow pavements and any muddier stretches.

Getting There

Time to gather your squad and begin this archaeological whodunnit:

By car - Start your investigation in Market Square, where you can park for free in the small car park outside the Town Hall (AB51 0AA), using ///glue.teachers.mango.

If every space has already been nabbed, more parking is available nearby on Baker Street (AB51 0GD), using ///scored.ally.poet.

By public transport - Make your way into Oldmeldrum town centre, then head for Market Square and the Town Hall to begin the investigation.

Need the Loo?

Even top Detectives need a comfort break before digging into a serious case. Public toilets are available just before Clue 05, close to Market Square and the Baker Street car park, so there’s useful intel early in the route before the investigation gathers pace.

Bring Your Furry Sidekicks

Four-legged Detectives can join the outdoor investigation 🐾

This route includes town pavements, road crossings, church grounds, lanes, greener paths and rural-feeling stretches. Keep dogs close throughout, especially near traffic, narrow pavements, church paths and any muddy or uneven areas. Any dog attempting to excavate “evidence” should be supervised by a responsible human with a poop bag and a sense of historical restraint.

Food & Drink Stops

Solving an archaeological mystery can leave the squad feeling peckish enough to eat a fossil.

You’ll begin in the heart of Oldmeldrum, with handy places nearby to stock up on snacks, drinks and other case-solving supplies. There are refreshment options around the town centre too, so Detectives can refuel before, during or after the hunt for Barry’s culprit.

Want to Make a Day of It?

Glen Garioch Distillery

Glen Garioch Distillery is a strong extra for grown-up Detectives interested in Oldmeldrum’s whisky heritage. Founded in 1797 by brothers John and Alexander Manson, it’s one of Scotland’s oldest whisky distilleries and a major part of the town’s story.

Meldrum Parish Church

The route visits the church grounds, which are worth a respectful extra pause. Keep to the paths, enjoy the quieter surroundings and let the investigation slow down for a moment before Barry’s case gets busy again.

Community Woodland

The Community Woodland gives the route a greener section and a good chance to stretch the legs away from the town streets. It’s a pleasant add-on for families who like a little fresh air with their clue-hunting.

Oldmeldrum Town Centre and Market Square

Market Square and the Town Hall make a handy base for the day, with parking, nearby facilities and local refreshment options. It’s a good spot to linger after the case, compare theories and make sure Barry’s golden secret has been properly unearthed.

Mini Detective Club

We have three super duper themed Clubs for your child to enjoy as part of their Treasure Trail experience.

Perfect for 4-8 year olds, the concept behind the Clubs is that your child will get a bundle of goodies to excite them about their forthcoming Trail experience, something to keep them entertained whilst travelling to and from the Trail, and something to be given on completion of the Trail as a keepsake.
