The original Much Wenlock games, held in 1850, were a mix of athletics and traditional country sports like quoits, football, and cricket. Occasionally, a “fun” event was included – one year, a wheelbarrow race, another an old woman’s race for a pound of tea, and perhaps even a treasure hunt. We’ve recreated this early Olympic idea for you, right here in Much Wenlock, where you’ll follow in the footsteps of those first athletes!

Your team name is ‘The Gladiators,’ but be warned – there’s a rival team, ‘The Hornets,’ who are trying to catch up and disrupt your progress. They may follow you, so you’ll need to outsmart them at every turn. Do you have what it takes to win this Olympic event and stay one step ahead of the Hornets?

The Great Olympic Adventure in Much Wenlock

Prepare for an exciting, self-guided adventure around the historic town of Much Wenlock, as you explore its town centre and the surrounding countryside. This Olympic-style challenge will test your team’s ability to solve clues, follow clues hidden in the town’s streets, and work together to reach the finish line. Along the way, you’ll experience the Olympic history of the town, including references to Dr. William Penny Brookes, a founder of the modern Olympic movement.

But it’s not just a race – you’ll need to solve puzzles, avoid the Hornets, and use your wits to navigate through this beautiful area, while crossing off locations from your treasure map. The challenge includes a series of historical clues, with a focus on the town’s Olympic heritage.
