The Malice of the Chalice from the Palace!

It was a normal day for roadworks contractor Jack Hammer when, while working outside St Andrews Church in Much Hadham, his spade struck something unusual – not a discarded shopping trolley, but a rusty old box! Inside, he discovered ancient papers that smelled like history and mystery. The box had been hidden in a long-forgotten tunnel beneath the road, linking the church to an old pub. One of these papers contained a drawing of a jewelled chalice, allegedly stolen centuries ago by a rogue cleric from the nearby Palace of the Bishops of London before it disappeared overseas.

The other papers contained cryptic clues, which have now been sent to the Intrepid Explorers Society (IES). We need some sharp adventurers to unravel this mystery by solving the clues and revealing where the chalice is hidden. Do you have what it takes to crack the code and recover the treasure?

The Great Quest for the Chalice in Much Hadham

Prepare for an exciting, self-guided adventure through the beautiful village of Much Hadham. You’ll explore secluded footpaths, historic buildings, and charming streets as you solve clues and uncover the location of the lost chalice.

Can you solve the mystery and track down the hidden chalice? Join the adventure and test your skills – the treasure awaits!

What is a Treasure Trail?

Before You Set Off

Please Note:

WARNING! There are some sections of this route which are quite steep and can get a bit muddy and slippery at times. Please don your sturdiest explorer footwear before heading out on this adventure!

You'll be exploring uncharted territory around the village, so make sure you bring provisions as there are no shops along the route (although there is a convenience store towards the other end of the village). There's The Bull Inn (after Clue 15) for refreshments and a well-deserved rest (there are no public toilets in the village). There's also a play area by the car park at the start and end, for those members of your team who want/need to let off some steam!

If you fancy extending your visit after completing the Trail, why not check out the Much Hadham Forge Museum - which offers a glimpse into the lives of blacksmiths and their trade, with its working forge, blacksmithing tools, and historical displays. Check ahead for opening days/times and admission prices.

Further afield, there is the Henry Moore Studios & Gardens which is well worth a visit. Definitely check ahead before you visit as this closes over the winter period.
