Navigating The Route

This is a circular Detective Mystery around Monmouth’s historic streets, castle area, church grounds, shopping courtyards and riverside, with Detectives helping Police Chief Jack Frost crack the cold case of football coach Dave Fowler.

The investigation covers approximately 1.6 miles and should take around 2 hours to complete. You’ll follow pavements through the town centre, explore tucked-away courtyards, visit St Mary’s Priory Church grounds, head up towards Monmouth Castle and cross the famous bridge near the River Monnow.

Most of the route follows pavements, with dropped kerbs and ramps available where needed, although you may need to travel a little further to find them. This Trail is suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs, but take care at road crossings, on the climb towards the castle, and around churchyard paths.

Getting There

Time to gather your squad and get this cold case moving:

By car - Park in Cattle Market car park on Blestium Street (NP25 3EG), using ///denim.snores.warp. From the car park, cross Blestium Street at the zebra crossing, turn left and follow the pavement to the Robin Hood Inn (NP25 3EQ), where the investigation begins.

By public transport - Make your way into Monmouth town centre, then head for the Robin Hood Inn on Monnow Street to begin the case. The start is close to Cattle Market car park and a short walk from the main town-centre streets.

Even top Detectives need a comfort break before a tricky investigation. Toilets are available in the start car park, so it’s worth making use of them before the case kicks off and Chief Frost starts waving everyone onward.

This town route includes pavements, courtyards, churchyard surroundings, road crossings and riverside areas, so keep dogs close and under control throughout. Please note that dogs are not allowed in St Mary’s Priory Church grounds, so canine colleagues will need to wait outside with a member of the squad during that section.

St Mary’s Priory Church

The route visits St Mary’s Priory Church grounds, where Detectives pick up several clues. Entry is via steps or a ramp to the left, making this a key historic stop along the investigation. Dogs are not allowed in the grounds, so plan that part carefully if your police pooch is on patrol.

Monmouth Castle and Regimental Museum Area

The case climbs to Monmouth Castle and the Regimental Museum courtyard, adding a strong historic flourish to the route. It’s a great place to slow the pace, take in the old stones and let the evidence settle before heading back down towards Monnow Street.

Monnow Bridge and Riverside

The final stretch reaches Monmouth’s iconic bridge and riverside area. Detectives cross over to the Millennium Plinth and return to read more about the bridge, making this a memorable finish to the case with views, history and one last burst of clue-solving drama.
