Navigating The Route

This is a circular Detective Mystery Adventure beginning in Lundin Links before heading into Lower Largo, with Detectives investigating the suspicious scuppering of survival show-off Hal B Offthen’s grand Selkirk sea-quel.

The case covers approximately 2.5 miles and should take around 2.5 hours to complete. You’ll follow clues through Lundin Links, down into Lower Largo, around the harbour, past the Alexander Selkirk statue and onto stretches of the Fife Coastal Path.

This Trail is not suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs. Expect steps, a stile, uneven ground, narrow pavements and some sections without pavements. Sturdy, weather-ready footwear is strongly recommended, especially if the coast has decided to throw a salty tantrum.

There’s also a route choice later in the Trail: in good weather, you can take a beach stroll back towards The Aurrie, or stick to the road route if conditions are poor. The road option includes narrow or non-existent pavements, so take care whichever path your squad chooses.

Getting There

By car
Park on Victoria Road, just off the A915 coastal route in Lundin Links (KY8 6AY), using ///file.fumes.available.

On-road parking is free along here. Your first clue is at the junction of Victoria Road and Leven Road, so bring everything you need before setting off on foot.

By public transport
Make your way to Lundin Links, then head for the junction of Victoria Road and Leven Road to begin the case.

Need the Loo?

Even top Detectives need a tactical pit stop. Public toilets are available midway through the investigation in the car park around Clues 14-15, so plan accordingly before the case heads back along the coast.

This coastal route includes village roads, narrow pavements, no-pavement stretches, steps, a stile, beach or road options and sections of the Fife Coastal Path. Keep canine colleagues close throughout, especially near traffic, the harbour, cliffside paths, beach areas and any uneven ground. It is also a dog-friendly beach all year round.

Food & Drink Stops

Solving a salty seaside mystery can leave the whole squad peckish.

There are a few small shops and pubs encountered along the way, but refreshment stops are limited, so bringing drinks and snacks is a smart move. There are some cracking picnic spots too, especially around the harbour, beach and coastal sections if the weather behaves itself.

Want to Make a Day of It?

Lower Largo Harbour The investigation leads down into Lower Largo and its harbour, giving this case a proper fishing-village flavour. It’s a lovely place to pause, admire the waterfront and keep one suspicious eye out for anyone looking too pleased with themselves near a boat.

Alexander Selkirk Statue The route visits the statue of Alexander Selkirk, the real-life castaway whose ordeal helped inspire a world-famous fictional character. It’s a key stop for this sea-quel mystery and a brilliant bit of local history woven into the case.

The Aurrie and Largo Obelisk The Trail passes The Aurrie, where Alan Faulds’ Largo Obelisk sits atop an old phone box, packed with local history and folklore. It’s part of the area’s quirky trail of coastal artwork, with carved details and seaside storytelling tucked into unexpected corners.

Fife Coastal Path A stretch of the route follows the Fife Coastal Path, offering sea views and a wilder edge to the investigation. Expect uneven ground, steps and changing coastal conditions, but the scenery gives the case a cracking outdoorsy flourish.

The Former Railway Line Part of the route follows an old railway line. It’s a fine little history layer beneath your boots, with many different cargos once moving along this route before today’s Detectives took over.

Beach Walk Option If the weather is good, the beach route back towards The Aurrie adds a classic coastal wander to the case. It’s optional, but a lovely extra if your squad fancies sand, sea air and a slightly more dramatic return before the final clues come ashore.
