The Mysterious Disappearance of One-Eyed Jack

The notorious Hartland Smuggler, One-Eyed Jack, was feared by all who knew him. His cunning smuggling operations had made him rich, but it all came to an end one dark and stormy night when he fell overboard and sunk to the depths of Davy Jones Locker. It was long believed that his ill-gotten gains had gone down with him, but now, there's a whisper of a secret island off the North Devon Coast where he may have hidden his treasure.

Join the Exploration Society on an exciting self-guided Treasure Hunt as we search for One-Eyed Jack's secret stash. Begin your quest at the car park in the centre of Hartland, and make your way to Hartland Point and the lighthouse, Stoke, and Hartland Quay, solving sneaky clues along the way.

The Smuggler's Secret Stash!

As you follow the linear route driving Trail, you'll uncover clues hidden in existing buildings, permanent features, and monuments, leading you closer to the location of the buried treasure. But be warned, this quest is not for the faint of heart. Only the most daring adventurers will be able to crack the clues and unearth the treasure.

So gather your family and friends, or bring the kids along for a fun day out on the Hartland Peninsula. The rumour is now a reality, and the treasure is waiting to be found. Are YOU ready to take on this perilous quest?

What is a Treasure Trail?

Before You Set Off

Before You Begin Your Hunt Around Hartland for One-Eyed Jack's Lost Loot...

Navigational Pointers - This Trail is a driving and walking Trail, so you will solve several clues in a particular location, then drive to the next destination to solve some more. Due to the nature of the territory in North Devon, you will be driving along several unavoidable VERY NARROW single-track lanes. Please take great care along these roads and don't speed - you never know what is around that blind bend! Take particular care if there is mud on the roads. Once on foot, you'll encounter a variety of terrain, with one section along the South West Coast Path. Keep an eye on the weather and bring appropriate clothing and footwear - you don't want to get caught short in a heavy downpour!

Bring Your Furry Companions - Dogs are welcome to join the search! You’ll pass through dog-friendly sections along the route, though keeping a lead handy around Hartland village and along the Coast Path stretch is recommended.

Getting There - The Trail starts in Hartland village car park, (EX39 6BL, W3W: ///lamp.transmits.cuts). You'll also be driving to Brownsham (EX39 6AN, W3W: ///submit.webcams.takes), then Hartland Point, (EX39 6AX, W3W: ///yard.onto.snowballs), to St Nectans church in Stoke (EX39 6DU, W3W: ///chuckle.suspends.sweep) and finally to Hartland Quay (EX39 6DU, W3W: ///etchings.teams.walks).

PLEASE NOTE: There is a £3 fee to pay for parking at Hartland Point and another £3 fee to pay separately again at Hartland Quay. We STRONGLY recommend bringing cash for these, preferably coins, as there is no mobile phone signal at Hartland Quay to pay for parking via mobile devices.

Need the Loo? - Public toilets are available near the start in Hartland village (they are signed from the car park) and again at the end of your quest, at Hartland Quay.

Other Pit Stop Places - As the majority of the Trail is along a rural route, you would be best to stock up on refreshments or snacks in Hartland village at the start, where there is a Post Office and shop, several pubs and a few cafes. At Hartland Point there is a small seasonal cafe. There is also a Hotel and Inn at the end point in Hartland Quay.

Heads Up! - Hartland Point car park shuts at dusk. Allow plenty of time - you don’t want to be locked out (or in!) before you’ve cracked the final clues!

Want to Make a Day of It?

Uncover More Hartland History - After completing your quest, why find out more about this fascinating area in Hartland Quay Museum (Open seasonally from Easter until October half-term, 11am - 4pm).

Picnic Like a Pro - As you'll be walking a stretch of the South West Coast Path, why not pack a picnic to enjoy while you take in the dramatic views over North Devon's coastline?

Head out onto the South West Coast Path - There are several further amazing coastal locations that are accessible further along from the route of the Trail once you've finished your quest. Why not pop into the Inn at Hartland Quay to purchase any number of walking routes, guides and books that are available, or check out the Hartland Peninsula website for further details.
