The Search for Blackbeard's Legacy

Local retired solicitor, Lady Laura Norder, has spent the last decade researching her family tree. With the advancements in DNA profiling, she has strong evidence to suggest that she is a distant relative of the infamous pirate, Edward Teach, also known as Blackbeard. According to historical evidence, before his final battle, Blackbeard threw overboard a bottle containing important legal documents that could prove Norder's family heritage and lead to an inheritance claim on his treasure. The bottle washed up on a small island off the coast of North Carolina, where a Spanish missionary buried it for safekeeping. Norder now has a map that purports to the bottle's location, but it contains several local clues that must be solved first. Will YOU join Lady Laura Norder on her quest to prove her lineage to Blackbeard the Pirate?

What is a Treasure Trail?

Before You Set Off

Before You Begin Your Quest...

Navigation - The Trail route is accessible for pushchairs, with mostly flat pavements, well-kept footpaths and mostly gentle gradients throughout. The route does explore along narrow lanes in part. You'll encounter a gate and churchyard with a possible muddy section that may prevent some wheelchair users from navigating the route with ease. To select the right footwear for potential muddy conditions, check the latest local weather forecast and be prepared before you set off.

Bring Your Furry Friends - Tracker dogs are welcome to join you on your search. The majority of the route runs along lanes paths and roads, so we recommend keeping them on leads. The beach by the car park at the start and finish of the Trail is unrestricted for dogs, meaning that it's ideal to let dogs have a post-quest run (or dip!).

Getting There - The Trail starts and ends in Happisburgh Community Car Park, Beach Road, (NR12 0PR - W3W: ///tram.trophy.thousands). Bus routes 34 (North Walsham) and 834 (Bacton) stop at Happisburgh Post Office, which is a short walk away from the start point in the car park.

Need the Loo? - There are seasonal public toilets available in the car park at the start and end of your adventure. Their opening hours are: From November to mid-March: open daily from 9am to 4pm. From mid-March to October: open 24 hours. (Click / tap here for the latest details)

Refreshment Spots - You'll pass a small cafe in the earlier part of your quest (by Clue 02), which isn't a long stroll to reach after finishing the Trail. You'll also pass a small village shop between Clues 04 and 05 that you can pop into for provisions if needed. Also, the charming village Inn is encountered around Clues 06 and 07.

Still got energy to burn? - If you fancy taking your explorations further, you can always divert from your quest to explore Happisburgh Lighthouse, it's open seasonally and paid booking in advance will be required, so plan your day accordingly! Click/tap here for more details about their Open Days. (Please note that dogs are not allowed in the lighthouse). As mentioned previously, the beach is also freely accessible next to the car park, so you can while away some time there pondering your findings once you've finished.

Word of Warning... - Happisburgh sits on a beautiful, dynamic, rapidly changing and eroding stretch of coastline. As a result, please do not venture too closely to the cliffs (at the top, or the bottom!) once you have finished your Trail as they can collapse without warning at any time.

The Trail route directs you away from the cliffs once you've parked your car.
