Great Torrington
Join the Exploration Society on an exciting quest to uncover the long-lost treasure of Lord Hopton. It all began on a stormy winter night in February 1646, when the General of the King's Army was forced to flee his headquarters at the Black Horse Inn in Great Torrington. In his haste, he left behind a fortune in gold, silver, and other treasures, which were never recovered after the battle.
For generations, the legend of the missing treasure has captured the imagination of adventurers, with many believing it was lost forever in the chaos. But now, a map and a set of curious clues have been unearthed during excavations of the inn, leading to the discovery of a clever young lad who buried the treasure to keep it safe from looters.
Treasure Hunt Through Great Torrington
Embark on a self-guided Treasure Hunt through the cliff-top town of Great Torrington, perfect for a day out with family and friends or a fun adventure with the kids. Starting at the South Street car park, the Trail will take you through the historic town, including the Town Hall and the Victorian Pannier Market, as you search for clues hidden in alleyways and cobbled streets.
