Please Note:
There is currently a diversion in place halfway through the Trail due to issues with the riverside towpath. This diversion is well signposted and will take you around the issue, thus bringing you back to the riverside further along - no clues are currently affected by this. (If the diversion has been removed could you please let us know - many thanks!)
Navigating The Route
This is a circular spy mission through Goring-on-Thames village centre, riverside paths, countryside lanes and the Thames towpath, with agents following pavements, churchyard paths and waterside routes as they gather the intel needed to stop Dr Mona Lott's foul-smelling scheme.
The mission begins in the village, heads out into the countryside along the Thames and then loops back into Goring. Much of the route follows the towpath, which can become muddy, uneven and occasionally flooded during winter or after heavy rain, so suitable footwear is essential.
The route includes rough towpath sections, kissing gates and country lanes, making it unsuitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs.
⚠️ Important: Agents will be travelling beside the River Thames for extended sections, as well as along country lanes and roads. Keep younger operatives under close supervision, stay well back from the water's edge and take particular care on muddy towpaths, wooden footbridges and near river traffic.
⚠️ The route also includes a section along a quiet country road where vehicles can approach quickly around bends. Operatives should walk in single file where appropriate and remain alert throughout.
Getting There
Time to deploy your agents and begin the mission:
By car: Your undercover base is The Wheel Orchard Car Park, Goring-on-Thames (RG8 9HB). If this car park is full, an alternative is available at Goring & Streatley Station Car Park (RG8 0EP).
By public transport: Goring & Streatley railway station is located on the Great Western Main Line and is within easy walking distance of the mission area. If arriving by train, you can use the Platform 4 exit and begin the mission at Clue 17 before looping back to the station later.
Your first clue awaits beside the map in The Wheel Orchard Car Park, so switch to stealth mode immediately and begin gathering intelligence.
Need the Loo?
Even elite agents need a comfort break during a lengthy operation!
Public toilets can be found in The Wheel Orchard Car Park at both the beginning and end of the mission, making this a handy opportunity to visit HQ facilities before heading out onto the towpath.
Bring Your Furry Sidekicks
Four-legged agents are welcome on this mission 🐾
With riverside walking, countryside paths and plenty of interesting scents to investigate, this is a great outing for canine operatives. Just keep leads handy near roads, livestock, cyclists and especially along the riverbank.
Food & Drink Stops
Agents, keep your energy levels topped up!
There are plenty of opportunities to grab refreshments before Clue 06 and after completing the mission, with cafés, pubs and shops available in the village centre.
Alternatively, pack your own field rations and enjoy a picnic beside the river or along the towpath while keeping an eye out for suspicious SEFO activity.
Want to Make a Day of It?
Thames Towpath and Riverside Scenery
Much of the mission follows one of the prettiest stretches of the Thames, with riverside views, locks, wildlife and passing boats providing a spectacular backdrop for your undercover work.
Goring Lock
The route passes Goring Lock, which has been helping boats navigate the Thames for centuries. Originally built as a flash weir in the 1500s, the lock remains one of the area's most interesting riverside landmarks.
The Goring Gap
Goring sits within the beautiful Goring Gap, where the River Thames cuts through the Chiltern Hills and Berkshire Downs. The surrounding countryside offers excellent walking opportunities if you fancy extending your mission.
Optional Detour - George Michael's Riverside Retreat
The route passes the former Mill Cottage home of George Michael near Goring Mill. Fans may enjoy pausing nearby to appreciate a location linked to one of Britain's most successful pop stars, whose connection with the village is still fondly remembered locally.
