What is a Treasure Trail?

Before You Set Off

Navigating The Route

This is a circular Treasure Hunt through Glastonbury's historic streets, hidden lanes, sacred wells and legendary landmarks, with explorers following Doug Uppahole's trail of clues in search of the missing Glastonbury Hoard.

⚠️ The route includes a memorable climb to the summit of Glastonbury Tor, following around 300 steps to one of Somerset's most iconic viewpoints. The paths can be muddy and slippery after wet weather, and there are some uneven sections, kissing gates and footpaths along the way.

PLEASE NOTE - The climb requires a reasonable level of mobility and the route is not suitable for wheelchairs, mobility scooters or pushchairs, but most explorers find the effort well rewarded by the spectacular views and unique atmosphere waiting at the top. Sensible footwear is strongly recommended. The ascent is steep in places, but relatively short, with many visitors completing it at their own pace and enjoying the scenery along the way.

⚠️ Important: You'll encounter roads, crossings, steep slopes, single-track lanes and uneven footpaths during the adventure. Take extra care on the ascent and descent of the Tor, particularly after rain, and keep younger explorers under close supervision throughout.

Getting There

Time to gather your explorers and begin the search:

By car: Your expedition begins at St John's Square Pay & Display Car Park (BA6 9LJ), which serves as both the start and finish point of the quest.

By public transport: Several bus services serve Glastonbury town centre from nearby Somerset towns including Wells, Street and Yeovil. The start point is only a short walk from the main town centre bus stops.

Your first clue awaits near The Old Railway Canopy, just across from the entrance to the car park.

Need the Loo?

Even the hardiest explorers may need a comfort break before tackling Glastonbury's hills! Public toilets can be found in the starting car park and again shortly after Clue 07 as you begin the approach towards the Tor. If you're planning a picnic on the summit, it may be worth making use of these facilities before beginning the climb.

Bring Your Furry Sidekicks

Four-legged explorers are welcome on the quest 🐾

The route includes town streets, footpaths and open countryside, making it an enjoyable adventure for energetic dogs. Just be aware that the steep climb to the Tor can be just as tiring for canine companions as it is for their humans, and leads may be advisable near roads, livestock and busier areas.

Food & Drink Stops

Treasure hunting is hungry work, especially when a hill the size of Glastonbury Tor is involved!

You'll find plenty of cafés, pubs and shops near the start and finish in Glastonbury town centre, making it easy to stock up before setting off or celebrate a successful quest afterwards.

Many explorers also choose to bring their own provisions and enjoy a well-earned picnic stop on or around the Tor, where the views stretch for miles across the Somerset Levels.

Want to Make a Day of It?

Glastonbury Tor

The undisputed star of the adventure. Rising high above the Somerset Levels, the Tor has inspired myths, legends and pilgrimages for centuries. Whether linked to King Arthur, Avalon or ancient spirituality, it's one of Britain's most iconic hilltops.

Chalice Well

The Trail passes close to the famous Chalice Well, a peaceful garden and natural spring that has attracted visitors for generations. Many regard it as one of Glastonbury's most spiritual locations.

Glastonbury Abbey

The ruined abbey lies at the heart of many local legends, including tales of King Arthur, Guinevere and Joseph of Arimathea. It's one of the most fascinating historic sites in Somerset.

Optional Detour - The Summit Views

You've already climbed all the way to the top, so don't rush back down! Take time to enjoy the panoramic views across the Somerset Levels, Mendip Hills and surrounding countryside. After conquering 300 steps, you've earned a few minutes to soak it all in.
