A trail of clues awaits in

Folkestone

Ahoy, fearless treasure hunters! Get ready to set sail on a self-guided treasure hunt adventure through the seaside town of Folkestone. Prepare to unravel intrigue, solve riddles, and breathe in the salty sea air. You'll weave through historic streets, scour the bustling Harbour Arm, and climb to cliffside viewpoints in search of crucial clues.

There's a fishy tale to unravel...

Once upon a sea shanty, Captain Rusty Riddleboots and his gang The Shifty Shrimps roamed the smuggling haven of Folkestone. Masters of dodging revenue officers and cracking fishy puns, their escapades were as legendary as the contraband they stashed. Their antics included skate-ing past patrols, mullet-ing over cunning plans, and slipping away faster than slippery eels.

But when the Crown's men finally cornered them (plaice-ing barrels of bootleg booze where everyone could see wasn't their best idea!), Rusty devised one last grand scheme. He hid his lucky charm, the Golden Kipper of Fortune, on a secret island somewhere in the English Channel, leaving a series of clues so twisted they'd make a herring do a double-take.

Rumour has it, Rusty's ghost still haunts the harbour, chuckling whenever treasure seekers take the bait or start flounder-ing. Are you skilled enough to crack these riddles and have a whale of a time reeling in the fabled fishy prize?

Golden Kipper Quest: A Self-Guided Treasure Hunt Through Folkestone

Your adventure begins at the bustling Harbour Arm, where whispers of smuggler activity have surfaced. But be warned-this Trail won't be easy. Captain Rusty Riddleboots has always been one step ahead, and only the sharpest minds will be able to piece together the clues left behind.

More Information:

Before you set off on your awesome adventure to explore Folkestone, there are a few things you need to know…

PLEASE NOTE - The Harbour Arm is open from dawn to dusk (and generally later on Fridays and Saturdays) but can be closed off completely during inclement weather.

The route isn’t friendly for wheelchair users or pushchairs due to very narrow pavements and steep hills and steps encountered along the way.

Bring your four-legged friends along! The Trail passes near a few beaches where your dogs may be able to have a run around, but we recommend double-checking any local bylaws.

You have a few options for parking near to the start of this Trail. The closest is Shellons Street car park, (CT20 1BP), It's not very large, so may fill quickly in peak seasons and also may not be the cheapest option but it's only a 2 minute walk away from the start point at the Folkestone Museum and Visitor Information Centre on Guildhall Street, (CT20 1DY). (Click here for directions from this car park.)
Larger, cheaper alternative parking can be found at Middleburg Square, (CP20 1AU) which is a 5 minute walk away (Click here for directions from this car park). There is also NCP Folkestone at Bouverie Place, (CT20 1AU), a 3 minute walk away from the start point - and perhaps a great option if you wish to indulge in some retail therapy once you've completed your quest! (Click here for directions from this car park).

There are some fantastic events in Folkestone's calendar, particularly at the Harbour Arm, all of which are great times to visit. However, you may find that some of the clues on this Trail become obstructed or difficult to access on these occasions. Please check for events before setting off.

There are public toilets available at the bus station close to the start of the Trail, at the Harbour Arm midway through and at Fishmarket, towards the end. (Click here for further details of public toilet facilities throughout Folkestone.) The route passes several great cafes, bars, and shops along the way. There is also Bouverie Place Shopping Centre which is close to the start and end points as well.

Looking for more things to do in Folkestone? Why not make a day of it and visit Folkestone Museum to learn more fascinating facts about the history of the town?
