A trail of clues awaits in

Devizes

According to the recently knighted historian, Sir Neil Downe, the crown treasures stolen from Devizes Castle in the 1600s may have finally been found. But before he could investigate and claim the hidden hoard, the notorious StinkyWinkyLeaks got a hold of the weathered document and published it for all to see. Now, the Royal Family's media operation, The Crown News Network (CNN), is offering fame and fortune to anyone who can uncover the long lost treasure's location. But with amateur treasure seekers and the perilous quest ahead, it's up to YOU - our most intrepid Explorers - to boldly follow the route, crack the sneaky Clues, and pinpoint the stash spot before anyone else beats you to it. Good luck!

More Information:

Navigating The Route

This is a circular Treasure Hunt through Devizes’ town centre, wharf and canal paths, with explorers following pavements, paths and waterside routes as they track down the hidden royal hoard.

While much of the route is on level ground, there are tighter turns, varied surfaces, steps and canal-side sections to navigate, so it is not suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs. Take care near roads and crossings, and be especially cautious along the canal, where there are stretches without barriers.

Important Info

Devizes sits on a hill at the eastern edge of the Vale of Pewsey. With its origins in the 11th century and its first market in 1141, the town continues to hold weekly markets in the Market Place, where the Trail starts.

The reference to the Castle is within the backstory of the Trail. Although you will get to see some views of the modern castle, the Trail does not enter their private grounds.

Getting There

Once you've gathered your explorers, you can begin the quest.
Market Cross, Market Place (SN10 1JG) - Your official starting point, right in the heart of Devizes.

By car: Parking is available at Station Road Long Stay Car Park (SN10 1BZ) - A convenient base for parking before heading into town on foot.

By public transport: Devizes is served by bus services from nearby towns such as Chippenham, Salisbury and Trowbridge.

Need the Loo?

Even the boldest adventurers may need a quick pit stop!
Public toilets can be found at West Central Car Park (SN10 1DP), just before Clue 11 along the route.

There are also plenty of cafés, pubs and snack stops dotted around the town centre for a well-earned refuel.

Bring Your Furry Sidekicks

Four-legged explorers are welcome on the quest. With town streets and canal paths to explore, it’s a great outing for canine companions - just keep leads handy near roads and especially along the water.

Want to Make a Day of It?

Market Town History & Royal Secrets - Devizes has been bustling since medieval times, with royal links, historic trade and centuries of stories hidden among its streets - the perfect setting for a treasure hunt with a royal twist.

Canal Paths & Wharf Wanderings - The canal and wharf section adds a scenic, slightly more adventurous feel to your quest. Keep your distance from the water and stay sharp - rival treasure seekers may not be far behind…

Museums, Pubs & Explorer Stops - From Wiltshire Museum to historic pubs and Market Place cafés, there are plenty of places to pause, refuel and review your notes before the final push to uncover the treasure.

Mini Explorer Club

We have three super duper themed Clubs for your child to enjoy as part of their Treasure Trail experience.

Perfect for 4-8 year olds, the concept behind the Clubs is that your child will get a bundle of goodies to excite them about their forthcoming Trail experience, something to keep them entertained whilst travelling to and from the Trail, and something to be given on completion of the Trail as a keepsake.
