Geologist Roxanne Stones and archaeologist Doug Holes have just returned from a thrilling expedition to Danes Dyke, where they discovered a sealed casket hidden in the undergrowth. Inside, they found an ancient map of a little-known island off the East Yorkshire coast, along with a set of clues. But they're not the only ones interested in this treasure-rumour has it that the Flamborough Amateur Treasure Seekers (FATS) are hot on their trail.

Grab your family and friends and embark on an adventurous self-guided Treasure Hunt through the beautiful Danes Dyke Woods. This nature reserve is home to a variety of exotic trees, birds, and butterflies, as well as a man-made structure that has stood for hundreds of years. As you follow the circular route, you'll encounter sneaky clues hidden on existing buildings, permanent features, and monuments, leading you to the location of the buried treasure.
Get ready to explore the woods of Danes Dyke like never before, walking up and down steps and seeing the magnificent structure from different angles. But be quick-the FATS are determined to beat you to the treasure!

Navigating The Route
This is a circular Treasure Hunt around Danes Dyke Woods Nature Reserve, with Explorers helping geologist Roxanne Stones and archaeologist Doug Holes after they have found a suspicious sealed casket at Danes Dyke, cracking the clues, outpacing the FATS and pinpointing the treasure before they do.
The quest covers 2 miles and should take around 2 hours to complete. You'll set off from the main car park within Danes Dyke, follow woodland footpaths, cross a field, tackle lots of steps, pass a small wooden bridge and a metal gate, explore woodland, grassy field edges and a lane, then continue back towards the car park.
This Trail is not suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs. The route is set mainly along footpaths that can get muddy after rain, so we strongly recommend wearing suitable footwear. There are also lots of steps.
Keep to the paths where possible to protect the wild flowers and the ancient monument, and to avoid disturbing wildlife. Take care on the road section, where you should stick to the verge or pavement, and around the beach and steps area.
Getting There
By car: Begin your expedition at the main car park within Danes Dyke (YO15 1AA), using ///satin.nozzle.pens. There is a small charge for parking.
By public transport: Make your way to the main car park within Danes Dyke to begin the quest. The circular route brings you back towards the car park once the treasure has been pinpointed.
Need the Loo?
There are toilets at the main car park within Danes Dyke, so it's worth making a comfort stop before plunging into the woodland investigation.
Bring Your Furry Sidekicks
Four-legged Explorers are welcome to join the hunt. 🐾
The route includes woodland footpaths, lots of steps, a field, grassy field edges, a lane, a road section and a beach and steps area, so keep canine companions close around traffic, wildlife and the coast. Muddy paws are likely after rain.
Food & Drink Stops
There is a cafe at the main car park within Danes Dyke, handy for pre-quest provisions or a post-treasure treat.
If you have a picnic with you, Clue 11 is not far from the car park, giving your crew a useful place to pause and refuel.

Danes Dyke
Danes Dyke is the star of the adventure. Dane's Dyke cuts across Flamborough Headland as a mighty bank-and-ditch earthwork, once helping to defend the peninsula. Despite its name, it's thought to be far older than the Vikings, possibly dating to the Bronze Age, with later reuse. Today it's a woodland nature reserve and ravine walk - ideal territory for Explorers with an eye for ancient secrets.
Cliff Top and Beach
One stretch of the route heads towards Cliff Top and Beach, giving families a scenic walk through the woods and down towards the coast. For an optional cheeky beach diversion, you can build an arrow from pebbles or leave a message to send rivals the wrong way.
Flamborough Headland
The Trail passes across Flamborough Headland, where Dane's Dyke forms part of the landscape as a defensive earthwork on the peninsula. Once the casket's hiding place has been narrowed down, it's worth taking a moment to enjoy how the woodland, earthwork and headland all fit together.
