Culrossed Wires And Crooked Choirs

Culross has been thrown into festival chaos! Last night's annual Culross Festival was building towards a show-stopping encore from singing sensation Carrie Oakey and her duet partner, Dan Singh. But just as they stepped up to perform, the lights went out!

Gasps echoed through the darkness and when power returned, Carrie and Dan were discovered slumped on the stage. The encore was off, the audience were all shook up and suspicion was suddenly top of the bill.

Chief Inspector Laura Norder and her team have been working around the clock, gathering evidence and narrowing down the suspects. Now they need top Detectives to follow the Trail of clues around Culross, separate the sharp notes from the flat ones and solve this pitch-perfect puzzle.

Detective Mystery Through the Historic Village of Culross

Step into the role of a Detective on this self-guided mystery through one of Scotland's best-preserved historic villages. Beginning near the Eastern end of the village, your investigation winds through Culross' charming streets, past the Mercat Cross, up to the ancient abbey, behind the striking palace and finally into the square in front of the Town House.

Along the way, you'll solve sneaky clues hidden on existing buildings, permanent features and monuments, eliminating innocent suspects and pieces of evidence until only the culprit and the incriminating object remain! Expect steep hills, historic closes, spectacular views and plenty of fascinating local history as you investigate.

Can YOU crack this off-key case and help Chief Inspector Laura Norder bring the culprit to justice?

What is a Treasure Trail?

Before You Set Off

Navigating The Route

This is a circular Detective Mystery through the centre of Culross, up to the abbey and behind the palace, with Detectives following clues to uncover who caused chaos during Carrie Oakey and Dan Singh's ill-fated festival performance.

The case covers approximately 1.5 miles and should take around 1.5 hours to complete. Detectives will be investigating historic village streets, a community garden, the abbey grounds, old paths, steps, the palace area and the square in front of the Town House. This Trail is not suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs.

There is a steep hill, a long flight of steps and some old, uneven or slippery paths along the route. You will also encounter roads without pavements in places, so keep younger Detectives and canine colleagues close while moving between clues.

Getting There

By car: Park at East Low Causeway car park, off the main coastal route through the village, KY12 8HQ. The what3words location is ///commit.builders.behalf.

Need the Loo?

Even top Detectives need a comfort break during a tricky case. Toilets are available near the picnic spot around Clue 17, where there is also a play park if any Mini-Detectives need to run off some extra investigative energy.

Bring Your Furry Sidekicks

Four-legged Detectives can join the investigation!
This outdoor case includes historic streets, narrow sections, steep climbs, steps and areas without pavements, so keep dogs under close control throughout. Take extra care near roads, old paths, steps and the busier village centre, and check individual cafes before taking canine colleagues inside.

Food & Drink Stops

Tracking down an off-key culprit can work up an appetite.
Refreshment and snack stops in Culross are limited, so it is worth planning ahead before you set off. There are a couple of great little cafes near the palace around Clue 14. Alternatively, pack supplies for a picnic, with a good stop around Clue 17 where you will also find toilets and a play park.

Want to Make a Day of It?

Culross Old School Yard Community Garden
Early in the case, Detectives visit the Old School Yard Community Garden. Created in 1999. It is now cared for by the community, with seating, planting and orchard fruit to spot.

Culross Abbey
The route climbs to Culross Abbey, founded in 1217-18. Take a little extra time to explore the abbey area if you wish, but watch for slip and trip hazards as you move around these fascinating historical grounds.

Optional Detour - Gardens Near Cats Close
On the way back down from the abbey, there is a secret garden before Cats Close that is sometimes open to the public and can be well worth a quick peek if accessible during your visit.

The Study and Mercat Cross
The route passes the Mercat Cross and The Study, a merchant's house with a gripping history. It is a lovely slice of Culross character, with just enough mystery in its walls to suit the case.

Culross Hanging Gardens
From the path behind the palace, you will get a glimpse over Culross' Hanging Gardens with great views across the Firth of Forth beyond.

Culross Palace and The Square
The final stretch brings Detectives into the square, near Culross Palace, a small but perfectly formed area packed with historical features and points of interest.

Essential Intel

The route includes steep hills, old steps, uneven paths, areas without pavements and churchyard sections where memorials may be unstable. Take your time, wear sensible footwear and keep the whole squad together.
