Navigating The Route

This is a circular Detective Mystery around Crieff Town, Park & Gardens, with Detectives helping DCI Luke Warm investigate the suspicious death of farmer Chris P. Bacon, follow the trail, sniff out the truth and bring the guilty party to justice.

The case covers approximately 1.5 miles and should take around 1.5 hours to complete. You'll begin outside the old Crieff Town Hall and Information Centre in the High Street, work through the town centre, investigate church grounds, gardens, quiet roads and historic corners, then finish in James Square, with the starting point just a little further along the High Street.

This Trail is not suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs. The route goes along pavements, clear paths and quiet roads, but includes steps and a hill climb.

Take care around roads, especially the busy roads around the war memorial where there are no pavements, the main road, and the road at the pedestrian crossing by James Square.

Getting There

By car: Start your investigation outside the old Crieff Town Hall and Information Centre in the High Street (PH7 3HU). The nearest car park to the start point is Union Terrace (PH7 4DE).

By public transport: Make your way to the old Crieff Town Hall and Information Centre in the High Street to begin the case. The circular route finishes in James Square, with the starting point just a little further along the High Street.

The route includes pavements, clear paths, quiet roads, steps, a hill climb and careful road crossings. Keep canine colleagues close around traffic, especially near the war memorial, the main road and James Square.

There are plenty of cafes, pubs and bars in the town centre, including places on the comfort scheme. Once the culprit has been cornered, you can celebrate a successful case in one of the lovely cafes or pubs in Crieff.

Macrosty Park

Macrosty Park is signposted from the route as an optional detour if you have time to check it out. Opened in 1902 and named after its benefactor, James Macrosty, who was Provost of the town, the park is described as one of the most picturesque in Scotland and has recently been upgraded.

St Michael's Church

The investigation takes you into the grounds of St Michael's Church hall, on the site of Crieff's very first parish church, dating back to 1199. In its day, the spot also housed the parish school and Clerk's house, and today only the ruins remain, with the footprints of history still marked out.

Drummond Arms Hotel

Keep your detective eyes peeled for the Drummond Arms Hotel opposite, built in the 1870s. The original Drummond Arms Inn on this site was where Bonnie Prince Charlie held his last war council in 1746 before marching on to Culloden and defeat.

King Street Railway Bridge

The bridge in King Street crosses over the old railway line, a reminder that Crieff was once a major junction railway station where the Crieff Junction Railway, Crieff & Methven Railway and the Comrie, St Fillans & Lochearnhead Railway all met. The station opened as 'The Terminus' in 1856, later links opened in 1867 and 1901, passenger services ended in 1964 and freight continued until 1967.
