The Great Coniston Mystery - Stop the Flat-Landers' Plot!

The peaceful village of Coniston is in grave danger, and it's up to YOU to save the day! The Old Man of Coniston, a beloved figure living inside the mountain, is struggling to keep it inflated with his trusty footpump. The mischievous Flat-Landers, a lazy walking group from the lowlands, have been using the sharp ends of their walking poles to poke holes in the mountain, causing it to slowly deflate.

But fear not, brave adventurers! The energetic Climber-Uppers have hired you to put an end to the Flat-Landers' antics. You have intercepted a set of clues that will lead you to their secret hideout - FLHQ. Your mission is to solve the code and locate FLHQ so that we can go and blunt their poles. Good luck!

What is a Treasure Trail?

Before You Set Off

Before you set off on your awesome adventure, there are a few things you need to know...

Unfortunately, due to one steep section at the start, quiet lanes without pavements, narrow paths and gravelly sections, this Trail is unsuitable for pushchair and wheelchair users.

Four-legged friends are welcome, but they will have to stand guard outside the cemetery whilst someone bravely enters to solve one clue before returning to the same gate. Dogs will need to stay on leads and be well-behaved in areas where sheep are present.

Toilets can be found at the start/finish point. Why not plan a picnic for the lakeside, which you'll be at three-quarters of the way around? There are opportunities for snacks and refreshments in the first section of the village and at the lakeside.

Parking is available at Coniston Village car park on Ruskin Avenue (LA21 8EH). If this is full when you visit, Coniston sports and social centre on Shepherds Bridge Lane (LA21 8AL) is only a five-minute walk away and signed from the A593 and B5285.

There are some fantastic events in Coniston's calendar, from the summer Coniston Country Fair to the phenomenal CONISTON CHALLENGE. Although these are great times to visit Coniston, some of the clues on this Trail may become obstructed or difficult to access. If you would like further information about event dates, please contact Coniston Visitor Information.

Why not make a day of it and visit enjoy the lake with a motor boat? Or you could even find out more about the history of the area at the fascinating Ruskin Museum. If you want to search for some treasure nearby, we have the Coniston Low Yewdale Treasure Hunt Trail available too.
