Cupar to Ceres - Kemback & Pitscottie

Essential Intel
This is a cycling Treasure Hunt, with around 9 miles of cycling and 1.25 miles of walking. You'll ride from Cupar to Kemback, Pitscottie and Ceres, tackle the main clue-hunting section on foot around Ceres, then cycle back to Cupar at the end.

Navigating The Route
This Treasure Hunt quest should take around 2.5 hours to complete. You'll begin at Cupar railway station, cycle out towards Kemback, stop near the waterfall, continue through Dura Den to Pitscottie, then ride on to Ceres for the walking section around the village. After the final clue, there's a direct cycling route back to Cupar, or a longer optional return route via Craigrothie and around the Hill of Tarvit.

This Trail is not suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs. 

Expect road cycling, village roads, some busy sections, hills, stone bridges, footpaths, churchyard paths, fields and surfaces that may become muddy or slippery after wet weather. 

Explorers should be confident cycling on roads and ready to dismount where needed.

Getting There
By car - Make your way to Cupar railway station (KY15 5HX), using ///binds.dolphin.fuse.

The adventure begins from the station car park. Use the facilities or stock up on provisions before setting off, then roll out carefully onto the first cycling section.

By public transport - Cupar railway station is the starting point, so arriving by train drops Explorers right at the beginning of the quest. The route also returns to Cupar station at the end, making it a handy launch and landing pad for the expedition.

Need the Loo?
Even seasoned saddle-bound Explorers need a comfort break before chasing a centuries-old bounty. Toilets can be found at Cupar railway station at the start, and next to Fife Folk Museum in Ceres around Clue 06.

Bring Your Furry Sidekicks
This is mainly a cycling Trail, so four-legged Explorers are only a good fit if your team can manage them safely around bikes and potentially busy roads.

The route includes road cycling, village streets, paths, churchyard areas and potentially muddy sections. Keep dogs close during the walking parts, especially near roads, bridges, car parks and any slippery ground. Any hound attempting to dig up Bannockburn booty should be politely redirected.

Food & Drink Stops
Treasure hunting by bike can make the whole crew properly peckish.

There are supermarkets near the start in Cupar for provisions, plus a cafe or sandwich bar in Pitscottie and a couple of stores in Ceres. You'll also find cafes and pubs en-route, so there are several chances to refuel before the map starts rustling with hunger.

Fife Folk Museum
Fife Folk Museum is the biggest extra on the route. Set around old buildings including the tolbooth and traditional weavers' cottages, it explores everyday Fife life through the centuries. There's even a tiny dungeon beneath the tolbooth, which is a pleasingly dramatic bonus.

Ceres Village and Highland Games Heritage
Ceres has strong links to Bannockburn and is home to Scotland's oldest free Highland Games, traditionally connected to Robert the Bruce and villagers who supported him in 1314. If your visit lines up with the Games, that's a proper treasure chest of atmosphere.

Ceres Old Churchyard
The route visits Ceres Old Churchyard, where Explorers should search respectfully and stay close to the main paths. If the church porch is open, look out for the 15th century stone knight, dressed in plate armour with his feet resting on a carved lion.

Hill of Tarvit
The optional extended return route offers a tempting detour to Hill of Tarvit. This National Trust for Scotland property has an elegant mansion, gardens, estate paths and a hilltop viewpoint with sweeping views. Admission charges apply for the house.

Dura Den and Kemback
The cycling section through Kemback and Dura Den adds a scenic slice to the adventure, with waterfall views along the way. It's a lovely place to slow the pace, admire the countryside and pretend your bike is a trusty expedition steed.
