A trail of clues awaits in

Burnham Market

While preparing for his next group of students, sailing instructor Abel C Man made an astonishing discovery-a message in a bottle washed ashore. As he pried open the bottle, he found an ancient, worn treasure map and a set of curious Clues. Convinced that solving the Clues will lead to untold wealth, Abel tried to decipher them but failed. With no idea where to start his search, he has turned to the Exploration Society for help in recovering the loot. And now, we need YOU, our most intrepid Explorers, to follow the sneaky Clues and pinpoint the location of the treasure trove. Will you take on the challenge and help fulfil Abel's dreams?

More Information:

Navigating The Route

This is a circular Treasure Hunt through Burnham Market's attractive village centre, historic greens, churchyards and quiet lanes, with explorers following pavements and clear paths as they track down the final hiding place of the long-lost treasure discovered by Abel C. Man.

The quest is level throughout, following pavements, village streets and good paths but one section is along a narrow pavement alongside a road, making it unsuitable for both wheelchairs and pushchairs.

⚠️ Important: Although much of the adventure takes place on quieter village roads, explorers will need to cross roads at several points and there are a handful of short stretches with no pavement. Please stay alert to traffic, use crossing points where available and keep younger adventurers under close supervision.

Getting There

Time to gather your explorers and begin the search:

By car: Park your expedition vehicle in the Foundry Place Pay & Display Car Park, North Street (PE31 8HG). This large village car park sits right beside the start of the quest and has around 186 spaces available.

By public transport: Burnham Market is served by local bus services linking it with King's Lynn, Wells-next-the-Sea and other North Norfolk villages. The village centre is a short walk from the main bus stops.

Your adventure begins beside the Village Map near Foundry Place, just beyond the car park and toilets. Follow the signs towards the Village Centre and prepare to start hunting for treasure!

Need the Loo?

Even seasoned explorers need a comfort break during a demanding expedition! Public toilets can be found at the start and end of the route beside Foundry Place car park, making this an ideal opportunity to visit the facilities before setting off in search of the treasure trove.

Bring Your Furry Sidekicks

Four-legged explorers are welcome on the quest 🐾

With village greens, quiet streets and plenty of interesting scents to investigate, Burnham Market makes a pleasant outing for canine companions. Just keep leads handy near roads and when exploring around the churchyards.

Food & Drink Stops

Treasure hunting can work up quite an appetite!

You'll find plenty of opportunities to grab refreshments, restock supplies and enjoy a well-earned break around the village green and market square, which you encounter throughout the middle section of the quest.

If you've packed your own provisions, the greens provide excellent picnic spots for comparing notes and checking your map before continuing the search.

Want to Make a Day of It?

Explore "Chelsea-by-the-Sea"

Burnham Market is often nicknamed "Chelsea-by-the-Sea", thanks to its stylish boutiques, galleries, cafés and popularity with visitors seeking a taste of North Norfolk village life.

Historic Village Greens

The village grew from three separate settlements - Burnham Sutton, Burnham Ulph and Burnham Westgate - which gradually merged into the attractive settlement you see today. Traces of those origins still survive in local churches and place names.

All Saints' Church

The quest passes through the grounds of All Saints' Church, whose historic tower and remarkable carvings are well worth a closer look while you're in the area.

Optional Detour - The Railway and Nelson Connections

The Trail passes the site of Burnham Market's former railway station. If local history interests you, it's worth discovering how the railway once connected the village to the wider Norfolk coast and helped visitors reach nearby Burnham Thorpe, the birthplace of Admiral Nelson.

Mini Explorer Club

We have three super duper themed Clubs for your child to enjoy as part of their Treasure Trail experience.

Perfect for 4-8 year olds, the concept behind the Clubs is that your child will get a bundle of goodies to excite them about their forthcoming Trail experience, something to keep them entertained whilst travelling to and from the Trail, and something to be given on completion of the Trail as a keepsake.
