Navigating The Route

This is a driving Detective Mystery through the Breadalbane area, with Detectives helping Chief Inspector Bobby Bullion investigate the death of Jan De Gold, head of De Gold Mining, by exploring the area to uncover evidence and identify the guilty party.

The investigation includes approximately 3.5 miles of walking and should take around 6 hours to complete. This is a driving Trail with separate stops - after each leg, you drive on to the next location, finishing at Balquhidder rather than returning to Tyndrum.

You'll begin in Tyndrum behind The Green Welly Stop, then continue between rural stops including the West Highland Way section, Crianlarich Community Woodland, Killin, Lochearnhead and Balquhidder. Along the way, expect footpaths, a bridge, a footbridge over the river, a woodland path, village roads and pavements, with a cycle path some of the way.

This Trail is not suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs. Several busy main roads have to be crossed, and there is a narrow lane to Balquhidder. On one section the pavement runs out, so walk carefully on the left-hand side of the road. Some sections are uphill, including hot uphill patrolling action in Killin.

Take care on the bridge over the river and the footbridge over the river, around vehicle movements near The Green Welly Stop, and when driving over the bridge in Killin. If the stream on the West Highland Way section is too high to cross, retrace your steps and use the alternative route.

There is also an optional final scenic detour walk, going up the hill behind the church, then straight ahead at the junction and over the wooden bridge before returning to the village hall.

Getting There

By car: Start your investigation in Tyndrum, in the car park just off the A82, Main Street, behind The Green Welly Stop (FK20 8RY), using ///decimals.rebel.warrior. Park in the car park just off the A82, Main Street, Tyndrum, behind The Green Welly Stop.

Alternative parking is available at Crianlarich Community Woodland car park (FK20 8QU), using ///traps.tilts.bars. The best postcode given is FK20 8QU. Park just after the village and follow the track up to the start of the woodland walk.

You can also use the Killin car park on the right, just after Capercaillie Restaurant (FK21 8US), using ///among.passively.scale. Park in the car park on the right, just after Capercaillie Restaurant.

Another alternative is Balquhidder village hall (FK19 8PA), using ///commuted.coasters.jeep. Parking donations please!

By public transport: Make your way to Tyndrum, then head for the car park just off the A82, Main Street, behind The Green Welly Stop to begin the investigation. Bear in mind this is a driving Trail with separate stops, finishing at Balquhidder, so you will need to travel back separately if you want to return to Tyndrum.

Toilets are available just after the Real Food Cafe in Tyndrum. There are also toilets in Lochearnhead, opposite the watersports centre.

The route includes village roads, pavements, rural paths, woodland, river crossings, busy main road crossings and a narrow lane to Balquhidder. Keep canine colleagues close around traffic, near the river, on the bridge and footbridge, and along the section where the pavement runs out.

Case-cracking takes stamina, Detectives. Refreshments are available at the Real Food Cafe and at the mini-market at Clue 04 in Tyndrum, so stock up before the investigation spreads out across the Breadalbane area.

Want to Make a Day of It?

Tyndrum Community Woodland

About one mile from Tyndrum, signposted Dalrigh, Tyndrum Community Woodland offers a circular walk leading to the site of the battle of Dalrigh. A fine extra for Detectives who like their evidence with a side of woodland and history.

Auchtertyre and Kirkton Farm walks

About one mile further on from Tyndrum Community Woodland, you may follow in the footsteps of St. Fillan. If your squad still has energy after interrogating the landscape, this makes another atmospheric extension to the day.

Crianlarich Community Woodland

Around 5 miles away, park in the small Community Woodland car park and follow the track up to the start of the woodland walk. The route passes an information board, a viewpoint with a bench, the station platform and the Community Woodland / playground - handy for giving Mini Detectives a proper runaround between clues.

Killin Parkpaths

There are many interesting walks in the Killin area, ideal if the uphill patrolling action has not worn everyone out. You can pick up a free copy of the Killin Parkpaths brochure from the Tourist Information Centre.

Balquhidder churchyard and Rob Roy's grave

The final section takes you to the parish church and churchyard area, and ends at one of the most famous graves in Scotland - Rob Roy's son Coll. It is a fittingly dramatic place to wind down once the evidence has been gathered and the Breadalbane case is nearly closed.
