The Pilfering Elves of Strid Wood - Can YOU Catch Them in the Act?

Uh-oh! The mischievous elves and goblins of Strid Wood have been up to no good again! They've been going round and round the garden of Bolton Abbey, quickly and quietly pilfering from unsuspecting visitors items that twinkle, twinkle like a star. These impish sprites then scarper off with their ill-gotten gains, happily chanting this little ode, "Hey diddle, diddle, we've been out on the fiddle and you won't be able to catch us soon! Our little ones laugh, to see such goods, as we arrive home singing this tune!"

But before these little piggies can go to market, they hump and then dump their goods in the woods! But could they be in for a big fall? A map of Strid Wood has just been discovered which we think might reveal this exact spot. There's also a set of clues on the back! Over to you Explorers…

What is a Treasure Trail?

Before You Set Off

Please Note:

Unless you are arriving on foot or by public transport, you must pre-book your parking at the Bolton Abbey Estate, including selecting your car park and arrival time slot in order to complete this Trail. The parking fee is payable per car. You can pre-book at www.boltonabbey.com. (Select the Village Car Park.)

Your quest entails a series of clues clustered around the village and priory, the Cavendish Pavilion and the Strid areas of the Bolton Abbey Estate. It's a linear 3.5 mile walk to solve the Clues. Once completed you will need to bravely return back to the start, so be prepared for a full seven mile walk.

The route includes well-maintained gravel footpaths and some riverside paths which could be muddy. Whilst mainly flat, there are some steps and short steep sections.

There are ample public conveniences and refreshment opportunities along the Trail. Bolton Abbey is also ideal for enjoying a picnic along the riverside.
