Navigating The Route
This is a circular Spy Mission around Bishop's Castle Market Town & Centre, with Agents sent to follow ciphered clues in Bishop's Castle to uncover the true identity and age of an ancient spy known only as Checkmate.
The operation covers approximately 1.5 miles and should take around 1.5 hours to complete. You'll start at the Station Street free car park next to the livestock market, investigate the historic town centre, St John's Church, the park around Clue 06, Market Square, the ancient cobbled street, the Town Hall area and the castle remains before returning to the start.
This Trail is not suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs. There are a couple of steepish hills, but neither are very long or that arduous. You'll also encounter stretches with little or no pavements, an ancient cobbled street and areas where you need to take care with traffic.
Keep Mini Agents close around busy roads, traffic on some sections and the no-pavement stretch after the Bowling Club. It's best to avoid tackling the Trail on market days, especially the first and third Saturday, as the town can get very busy.
Getting There
By car: Start your mission at Station Street free car park next to the livestock market (SY9 5AQ). Parking here is free, but Thursdays are market day where this car park may be unavailable.
By public transport: Make your way to Station Street free car park next to the livestock market (SY9 5AQ) to begin the operation. The circular route returns to the start once Checkmate's identity has been tracked down.
Need the Loo?
Toilets are in the start car park, and again about a third of the way round the Trail. There are also toilets near Clue 12 and along the cobbled street to the left of the Town Hall.
Bring Your Furry Sidekicks
Four-legged Agents are welcome to join the mission 🐾
The route includes busy roads to cross, traffic on some sections, stretches with little or no pavements, a no-pavement stretch after the Bowling Club, a couple of steepish hills and an ancient cobbled street, so keep canine recruits close and under control throughout.
Food & Drink Stops
Even elite code-breakers need supplies. There are plenty of refreshment stops and snack shops along the way, so you should have no trouble keeping your squad fuelled.
If you'd rather bring your own provisions, a picnic is possible in the park at Clue 06.
Want to Make a Day of It?
St John's Church
St John's is well worth a closer look once your spycraft duties allow. Its octagonal tower clock is dated 1847 and has just one hand. Below it, you may spot a faded red line that was once used for Sunday games of Fives, an old handball game played against a wall. The medieval tower also narrowly escaped Victorian replacement by a brand-new spire.
Bishop's Castle Town Hall
If the Town Hall is open, Agents can go inside to see it. The route also draws attention to its round windows, the cobbled street around it and a time capsule buried there - exactly the sort of suspiciously sealed object that deserves a second glance.
The Castle Remains and Old Castle Land Trust Area
The castle from which the town takes its name has mostly disappeared, but the remaining area is cared for by the Old Castle Land Trust. The Trust is also responsible for the House on Crutches Museum close to here, making this a strong extra for Agents who like their local history with a few missing pieces.
Market Square and the Castle Hotel
At the top of the cobbled street, the mission reaches Market Square, part of Bishop's Castle's historic centre and thriving market town character. The route also includes an optional short detour to the left to admire the Castle Hotel before the operation continues.
Big Playground and Skate Park
There is a big playground and skate park along the route, making this an easy way for Mini Agents to burn off any surplus undercover energy before or after the clues are cracked.
