Please be aware that Clue 18 is in a park where dogs are not allowed.

This route also includes roads with no pavements, tricky steps in the churchyard and some stretches with no pavement, including near the church. Take particular care around vehicle movements at the car park entrance and be alert for vehicles on the inland stretches.

Navigating The Route

This is a circular Treasure Hunt around Beaumaris Castle & Waterfront, with Explorers helping Helicopter Pilot Aaron C. Reskew use a map linked to the Welsh pirate Captain Dai Foverbord, who is locked up in the local gaol, to locate the treasure before the Captain can be rewarded.

The quest covers approximately 1.2 miles and should take around 2.0 hours to complete. You'll begin at Beaumaris Green Pay & Display car park off Castle Street, then investigate the castle and waterfront area, the pier, the local gaol, St Mary's Church and the park before the start car park appears just across the main road.

This Trail is not suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs. The route includes roads with no pavements, inland stretches where you need to watch for vehicles, a stretch with no pavement near the church and tricky steps in the churchyard.

Getting There

By car: Start your treasure-seeking expedition from Beaumaris Green Pay & Display car park off Castle Street (LL58 8BY). The car park is on the right just beyond the castle when travelling from the east, or on the left before the town, coming from the west.

By public transport: Make your way to Beaumaris Green Pay & Display car park off Castle Street to begin the quest. The circular route brings you back to the same area, with the start car park just across the main road at the end.

Comfort breaks are available at several handy points on this pirate-map pursuit: after Clue 05, near Clue 14, after Clue 16, and just through the arch opposite Castle Street.

The route also includes roads with no pavements, inland stretches with traffic to watch for, a no-pavement stretch near the church and tricky churchyard steps, so keep canine companions close and be ready to manage those sections carefully.

Food & Drink Stops

Treasure hunting around pirate territory calls for solid supplies. You'll find refreshments or snacks around Clues 05-06, Clues 13-14 and Clue 17, with a celebratory ice-cream mentioned at the end.

The park at the end of the Trail is recommended as a top picnic spot, ideal for a final refuel once Captain Dai Foverbord's map has been fully investigated.

Beaumaris Castle

Known locally as 'the great unfinished masterpiece', Beaumaris Castle was built as part of Edward I's iron ring of North Wales castles. Money ran out before it was finished, but its state of the art symmetrical concentric walls within walls design was complete. Explorers can also take on an optional castle side quest: check whether a metal ring is still on the side of the castle across the 18ft moat.

Beaumaris Pier

The original pier opened in 1846 and was rebuilt in 1872 in a new Victorian era style. After becoming run down, it was refurbished in 2012 whilst essential maintenance took place in 2020 - a fine waterfront extra once your crew has stopped interrogating every suspicious detail.

Beaumaris Gaol

Beaumaris Gaol is no longer in use but remains largely unaltered, making it a brilliant add-on for pirate-watchers and prison-break ponderers. Throughout its history, only one prisoner ever escaped: John Morris used a rope during his getaway but broke his leg and was recaptured outside the town.

St Mary's Church

Inside St Mary's 14th century church lies the stone coffin of Princess Joan of Wales, wife of Llewellyn the Great and daughter of King John of England. She was originally buried elsewhere, but after a fire, her stone coffin was used as a water trough for horses before being brought here!
