Barry Island to The Knap - Promenade & Harbour

Navigating The Route

This is a linear Detective Mystery from Barry Island to The Knap, with Detectives helping retired local policeman Old Bill investigate the disappearance of student Miss Dee Meanor after Hans Kuff got distracted by the arcades.

The investigation covers approximately 2.2 miles and should take around 2 hours to complete. You’ll follow the seafront promenade, pass cafes, amusements and adventure golf, explore rugged coastal paths, continue towards the harbour, then head through parks and gardens towards The Knap.

This Trail is not suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs. The route includes steps, coastal paths, park paths, harbour areas, car parks, beaches nearby and uneven sections, so keep younger Detectives close and take care underfoot.

Please note that this is not a circular route. Once the case is cracked, you can either retrace your steps back to the start or catch bus number 95 from near The Ship Hotel.

Getting There

Time to gather your squad and begin this seaside investigation:

By car - Park in Nell’s Point car park, on the corner of Station Approach Road and Friars Road (CF62 5AH).

You’re on foot from here, so make sure you have everything you need before setting off along the coast in search of Hans Kuff’s clues.

By public transport - Make your way to Barry Island, then head for Nell’s Point car park near Friars Road to begin the case. At the end of the Trail, bus number 95 stops near The Ship Hotel, giving Detectives an option for the return journey.

Need the Loo?

Even top Detectives need a comfort break before a long seaside stakeout. Toilets can be found around Clue 05, along with refreshment stops and snack shops. Make the most of this area, as it is your last good chance to stock up before the route continues towards The Knap.

Bring Your Furry Sidekicks

This route includes promenades, coastal paths, car parks, harbour edges, parkland and waterside sections. Keep canine colleagues close throughout, especially near traffic, steps, unfenced edges, the harbour, the lake and any busier seafront areas.

Food & Drink Stops

Tracking down a missing student can make the whole squad peckish.

Toilets, cafes, refreshment stops and snack shops can all be found around Clue 05, so stock up before the case moves on. If you’re bringing supplies, Friars Point makes a good pause for a picnic, or you can save your rations for beside the lake at The Knap once the investigation is nearly wrapped up.

Barry Island Seafront

The early stretch explores Barry Island’s seafront, with cafes, amusements, sea views and classic seaside bustle. Barry was once a major coal port, but today it’s better known for its beach, Pleasure Park and TV connections, including Doctor Who and Gavin and Stacey.

Adventure Golf and Arcades

Hans Kuff may have been distracted by Barry Island’s attractions, and your squad can see why. The route passes adventure golf, arcades and amusements, making it easy to add a bit of seaside fun before or after the serious evidence-hunting.

Friars Point

Friars Point is an optional extra wander with no clues to solve, but it’s a cracking place to pause and look back over the case so far. It also gives Detectives a wilder coastal breather before the route continues towards The Knap.

Parade Gardens

The route heads through Parade Gardens, a small Edwardian park with views across Barry Harbour towards Barry Island. It’s a pleasant green stretch away from the main road and a good place to slow the pace before the final part of the case.

The Knap and Former Lido

The Knap brings the investigation towards its scenic finish, with the lake, gardens and seaside views. The rectangular park area before the lake was once Knap Lido, locally known as The Baths, which closed in 1996 after decades of splashy local memories.

Barry Harbour

The harbour section adds a different flavour to the case, with waterside views and reminders of Barry’s rapid growth after the docks developed in the 1890s. Keep your eyes low for clues, but stay alert around car parks, roads and harbour-side hazards.
