Can YOU Unearth the Miner's Lost Fortune in Armadale?

Whispers of a hidden hoard have echoed through Armadale for generations. Long ago, when the pits were thriving, a crafty miner supposedly smuggled glittering treasure to the surface and hid it away. He even sketched a map - but it vanished, leaving behind nothing but rumours, riddles, and a trail of fool's gold.

Recently, a battered fragment of that map has resurfaced! Could YOU be the ones to piece it together and strike it rich? Be warned though - you're not the only treasure seekers chasing this legend. Others are closing in fast, so stay focused - false trails and red herrings could cost you the prize...

Treasure Hunt Through Armadale's Streets and Secrets...

Lace up your boots and keep your wits sharp! This self-guided Treasure Hunt Trail weaves through Armadale's landmarks, green spaces, and hidden corners. From the clock tower of The Goth, to Black Moss and the site of Bathville's former brickworks, you'll uncover quirky tales, local legends and sneaky decoys along the way.

So, what are you waiting for? Join the hunt, outpace your rivals and see if YOU can crack the clues to unearth Armadale's long-lost fortune!

What is a Treasure Trail?

Before You Set Off

Before You Begin Your Quest...

Navigation - The Trail is accessible for pushchairs, with flat pavements, well-kept paths and mostly gentle gradients throughout. A hill near the start, a raised drain cover, and a possible muddy section may prevent some wheelchair users from navigating the route with ease. To select the right footwear for potential mud, check the recent forecast and be prepared before you set off.

Bring Your Furry Friends - Dogs are welcome to join the search (though be warned, the nuggets you're looking for are golden, rather than chicken!). The majority of the route is through town, so we recommend keeping them on leads. You’ll pass through a dog-friendly green space when you reach Black Moss and Wood Park, between Clues 04 and 05, perfect for a doggy leg stretch.

Getting There - The Trail starts and ends at The Goth clock tower, at 50 West Main Street. You have a couple of options for parking, there is a 40-space car park on North Street, (EH48 3QB - W3W: ///toasters.fidget.phones), which is a 6-minute walk away from the start point. There is a slightly closer car park on South Street, (EH48 3ES - W3W: ///valued.uses.capillary) but this only has 26 spaces available. It is then a 3 minute walk to the start point. Bus route 73 stops at Academy Street and services 29, 6 and X18 also stop close to the centre of town, which is a short walk away.

Need the Loo? - There aren't any public toilets along the route but accessible facilities are available at Armadale Community Centre and Library during their opening hours. You'll pass this en-route to the start point and again at Clue 17.

Other Refreshment Spots - The earlier and later parts of the Trail route pass several shops, pubs, cafés and snack stops. We recommend stocking up early in town though, so you can take full advantage of the scenic benches further on - perfect for mid-quest rests.

Still got energy to burn? - If you fancy taking your explorations even further, why not become a Detective to crack the intriguing case in the neighbouring Bathgate Town & Park of Peace? Or channel your inner spy to crack the code in West Calder Village and Auld Kirk?
