The Priory's Hidden Treasure - A Quest Through Abergavenny

Long ago, back in 1542 to be precise, the ancient Priory of Abergavenny had to close down due to orders from King Henry VIII. But the townsfolk were able to use some of the Priory's treasure, revenue, and vast collection of books to establish a school for the local children.

Recently, The Exploration Society received an old coded diary from the school's library - a diary that once belonged to the Prior! We successfully deciphered the code and revealed a shocking secret... It turns out that the monks buried a secret stash of treasure in the town, and the diary points to its hidden home! We've been tasked with locating the trove and need you - our most intrepid Adventurer - to solve the clues hidden in the diary and track down the buried treasure. Good luck!

The Mischievous Monks' Ancient Secret

Join us on a thrilling adventure through Abergavenny as we search for the hidden treasure of the Priory. Our quest will take us through the town's most iconic landmarks and historic sites, as we follow the clues left behind by the mischievous monks.

Starting at the Market Hall, we'll make our way through the bustling Market Square and past St. Mary's Church, where the monks once worshipped. From there, we'll journey through the picturesque Castle Meadows and ascend to the ruins of Abergavenny Castle, where the monks' secret may be hidden.

Are you ready to uncover the ancient secret and claim the Priory's hidden treasure?

What is a Treasure Trail?

Before You Set Off

Before you set off on your awesome adventure to explore Abergavenny (Y Fenni), there are a few things you need to know...

You'll also be visiting the Linda Vista Gardens towards the end of the Trail, which close at 6pm. Please allow enough time to get to these clues before the gardens close.

Also allow extra time for an optional explore of the Abergavenny Castle grounds. There are no clues inside but access to the grounds is free, although charges may apply at some special events. The castle is closed during winter months and on Mondays and Wednesdays but on other days it is open from 11am-4pm.

The route is not friendly for wheelchair users and pushchairs due to steps, uneven terrain and narrow pavements.

There are a couple of clues set within an area of restricted access for dogs. Please only bring your four-legged friends along if a member of your expedition team is able to wait with them while you locate these clues.

The closest long-stay pay and display car park to the Trail start point is at Castle Street (NP7 5EE), just a two-minute walk away.

There are some fantastic events in Abergavenny’s calendar, all of which are fantastic times to visit this beautiful town. However, you may find that some of the clues on this Trail may become obstructed or difficult to access on these occasions. If you would like further information about event dates, please contact Abergavenny Tourist Information.

There are public toilets available towards the beginning of the Trail and just before Clues 06 and 10. The route passes several pubs, cafes, shops and the market between Clues 07-15, and there’s a great picnic spot at Clue 19.

Looking for more things to do in Abergavenny? Make a day of it and visit Abergavenny Museum at the castle or take a peek inside the Tithe Barn to learn more twisting tales about the market town’s past. Or, if you’re feeling adventurous, the Blorenge and Sugar Loaf peaks are nearby, just waiting to be climbed up!
